It’s always shocking when a music icon passes away, but which were the most tragic deaths in rock history? No one is immortal, we all know this, yet somehow the death of a celebrity impacts us in a unique way, especially when it comes to musicians. When someone is incredibly talented and touches our hearts with their gift, it seems almost unfathomable that this person will cease to exist at some point.

Over the past decades, rock legends have shocked us with sudden deaths due to all sorts of causes, both natural and self-inflicted. And much like the 10 worst celebrity career moves, which we wrote about last month, many of these deaths occurred in an untimely fashion, leaving fans and band members equally distraught.

The following list includes some of the biggest names in the music industry that succumbed to the forces of human nature and/or their own vices. From drowning, to accidental suicides, to shoot-outs, let’s take look at the ten most tragic deaths in rock history and ponder those which remain a mystery.

10. Freddie Mercury

A truly revolutionary character in the rock world, Freddy Mercury not only wrote some of the most epic songs of all time, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” (which included the lyrics “I don’t want to die”, which Freddy unfortunately could not avoid), but he was also very enigmatic about his sexual orientation. Whether he was gay or not, the flamboyant singer tested positive for HIV/AIDS in 1986 and succumbed to the causes of the disease by November 24th of 1991. He was only 44 years old.
