Over the past decades, rock legends have shocked us with sudden deaths due to all sorts of causes, both natural and self-inflicted. And much like the 10 worst celebrity career moves, which we wrote about last month, many of these deaths occurred in an untimely fashion, leaving fans and band members equally distraught.

The following list includes some of the biggest names in the music industry that succumbed to the forces of human nature and/or their own vices. From drowning, to accidental suicides, to shoot-outs, let’s take look at the ten most tragic deaths in rock history and ponder those which remain a mystery.

10. Freddie Mercury

A truly revolutionary character in the rock world, Freddy Mercury not only wrote some of the most epic songs of all time, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” (which included the lyrics “I don’t want to die”, which Freddy unfortunately could not avoid), but he was also very enigmatic about his sexual orientation. Whether he was gay or not, the flamboyant singer tested positive for HIV/AIDS in 1986 and succumbed to the causes of the disease by November 24th of 1991. He was only 44 years old.

One of the most tragic deaths in rock history has been recounted. The following pages have nine more unfortunate passings.

9. Nick Drake

This folk singer suffered from depression and social anxiety for most of his life, so it came as no surprise when the coroner ruled his death a suicide through an overdose of prescription pills. Although Nick Drake didn’t have a large fan base at the time of his death, this would change many years later, as his musical talent gained the recognition it deserved.

8. Janis Joplin

One of the deaths that saddened the music community the most was that of Janis Joplin. Unique and iconic like none other, she was the voice of an entire generation and had one of the most fanatic followings in music history. Unfortunately, like many other legends of her decade, Joplin developed a heroin addiction and died of an overdose on October 4th of 1970. She was found on the floor of her hotel room with a cigarette in hand, on the day she was scheduled to record the last song for her album “Pearl”. As life’s irony would have it, the song’s title was “Buried Alive in the Blues”.

7. Jeff Buckley

Yet another talented musician that died before his time. Right before he was meant to start recording his second album, Jeff was hanging out at Wolf River with a friend and decided to take a dip in the river with his clothes on. His friend had his back to him and when he turned around Jeff’s body had been swallowed by the water. Some claim that the singer never really died, but who really knows.

6. Tupac Shakur

One of the most tragic deaths in the music industry was undoubtedly Tupac Shakur’s. Throughout his musical career, the rap legend had made many enemies, a fact that caught up to him on the night of his death. 2Pac was in Las Vegas to watch a boxing match and was meant to perform at a nightclub alongside Run DMC, but never made it there. He was attacked in a drive-by shooting and was hit by three bullets. Paramedics tried to revive him, but he died of his wounds on September 13th of 1996.

5. Jim Morrison

Another enticing character of the rock world that left us much too early was Jim Morrison. Front man of The Doors and an incredibly talented lyricist, Morrison had suffered from drug addiction for a long period of time. Shortly after moving to Paris with his girlfriend Pamela Courson, his body was found in their apartment’s bathtub. Although the lack of an autopsy report stirred up many rumors regarding the cause of death, Courson claimed that Jim inhaled heroin, confusing it with cocaine, leading to an overdose.

4. Kurt Cobain

The lead singer of Nirvana and grandfather of grunge rock, Kurt Cobain committed suicide on April 8th of 1994, leaving his fans and family members devastated. However, since his death there have been many theories regarding the authenticity of the official report, with some speculating murder as the actual cause of death. The facts, nonetheless, remain that Cobain suffered from bipolar disorder, depression, and severe stomach pains, which lead him to abuse heroin and eventually to take his own life. After injecting himself with heroin in both arms, he wrote a suicide note and shot himself in the head with a Remington Model 11 20-gauge shotgun.

3. Jimi Hendrix

One of the saddest days of 1970, was September 8th, when Jimi Hendrix was found dead in his girlfriend Monika Dannemann’s apartment in Notting Hill. The world’s greatest guitar player was merely 27-years-old at the time of his passing, which most believe was accidental. After several disputes with Dannemann that evening, Hendrix had taken amphetamines and couldn’t sleep, so he turned to the barbiturate Vesparax to calm him down. Unfortunately he took nine tablets, causing him to overdose and asphyxiate on his own vomit.

2. Marvin Gaye

Tragic beyond belief, Motown’s legend Marvin Gaye was shot to death by his own father on April 1st of 1984. The singer had a difficult relationship with his father, but things escalated quickly when Gaye intervened in an argument between his parents. Stepping to his mother’s defence, he brutally attacked his father, who in return shot him with the .38 pistol his son had given him for Christmas. Marvin Gaye Sr. was arrested and prosecuted by the police, but according to Gaye Jr.’s last words, he had been suicidal for a long time.

1. John Lennon

The most tragic death in rock history is without a doubt the assassination of John Lennon. The Beatle had just returned from Record Plant Studio in New York with his wife Yoko Ono, and was entering The Dakota on 72nd street where he resided when fanatic Mark David Chapman shot him in the back several times. The murder occurred on December 8th of 1980. Lennon was 40-years-old and the event had a severe impact on fans and political activists alike.
