Are you a mountain feel-good hippy? Awesome, head up north. With places like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, there are mountains galore and that means plenty of hiking opportunities. Into temples, but prefer to learn more about the faraway past? Ayutthaya is the country’s old capital and holds temple ruins sprinkled about the city. The nearby Khao Yai National Park will provide you with more phenomenal views and opportunities to be one with nature. This is an excellent jaunt to get out of the crazy city of Bangkok.

Speaking of Bangkok, I hope you’re a city slicker because this is one mammoth destination. Get your shopping done and discover the temples, grimy alleys, and chic bars of the capital. When it’s time to get away and let your thoughts float away into oblivion, there’s no better place than the scenic beaches and islands of Thailand. Some of these islands are truly the best places to visit in Thailand for kids and families, so don’t think it’s for couples and young travelers only.

There’s so much to experience in Thailand, it’s hard to believe there can be only eight. So instead of thinking this is a comprehensive list, think about it as only the start of your list of the best places to see in Thailand before you die.
