Many might wonder how safe is our drinking water as pollution levels seem to be on the rise. So, The United States Environmental Protection Agency runs tests regularly to ensure safe and clean tap water in the United States which is under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The right level of fluoride present in tap water is regulated and complies with the strict standards of Safe Drinking Water Act. Most of the states in the US are in the participation of this activity.

Usually, people think that bottled water is the safest since it goes through a cleaning process and it is labeled. There are different types of bottled water such as artesian well water, mineral water, spring water, and well water. The good thing about buying bottled water if you are concerned about the levels of fluoride is that the amount will be listed on the bottles. International Bottled Water Association has a list of brands which has fluoride in their bottled waters, in case they contain added fluoride, they are strictly required to indicate it on the labels and must comply the limit of fluoride set by the FDA.

But why is it important to pay attention to fluoride levels in our drinking water?

While fluoride might help you fight cavities it might not be healthy in the water you drink as fluoride goes to everyone regardless of age, health or vulnerability, and accumulates in the body. “Healthy adult kidneys excrete 50 to 60% of the fluoride ingested each day, but the remainder accumulates in the body, largely in calcifying tissues”.

Some argue that children can be vulnerable consuming high amounts of fluoride, and Researchers from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and China Medical University in Shenyang, “combined 27 studies suggesting that fluoride may adversely affect cognitive development in children,” but they also believe more studies need to be done in this field.

Cancer is also another main concern, and according to the American Cancer Society, a rare type of bone cancer osteosarcoma, was observed in animals exposed to high amount of fluoride. But they also suggested that any conclusion should be look at it with caution. So, consuming bottled water without fluoride might be the way to go until more conclusive studies become available.

Take note that we should not generalize that all bottled waters have fluoride. If you prefer a fluoride-free drink, you may filter your water or make it undergo a process to remove fluoride. A study conducted by Alkaline Water Plus, reverse osmosis can remove fluoride from our water. Included in this study are fluoride testing of bottled water brands.
