As you may know already — since you’re using it all the time — Google is the most used search engine in the world. It handles some 40,000 search queries every second, adding up to billions each day. These are impressive stats and Google has to constantly learn something new to respond to, some new query that no one has used before. As the year draws to a close, the company has released lists of the most searched for queries throughout the year, including the top 10 most googled movies in 2015 and the top most popular searches on Google in 2015, to name a few.

So, now, we’re going to take a look at the top 10 most googled music artists in 2015 to see whether our favorites are on the list.

10. Chris Stapleton

Chris Stapleton is an American country and bluegrass musician that has some six number one songs, including “Never Wanted Nothing More” and “Come Back Song.” On top of interpreting his own music, he’s also written for many other artists, including Adele, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Luke Bryan.

This year has been quite a good one for Stapleton, as he won the CMA Awards for best male vocalist, new artist of the year and album of the year. He was also nominated for four Grammys for 2016, including album of the year, which is obviously an impressive feat for the 37 year old.

9. Hozier

In the past couple of years, Hozier’s career has taken off. The 25 year old has had quite a run with his phenomenal track “Take Me to Church” which has been making the rounds for quite a while, mesmerizing everyone who hears it due to the lyrics, the melodic line and the soulful voice singing it all.

Born in a musical family, the Irish singer has always been an artist. He even studied music at the Trinity College in Dublin, but thought better of it and dropped out during his first year to start recording demos instead, which he sent out to Universal Music. During his career he was a member of a choral ensemble. Then, in 2013, he released the EP that included his ticket to stardom – “Take Me to Church.” Thanks to YouTube, the track went viral and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hozier was nominated for a Grammy and even performed the famous track during the 2015 show alongside Annie Lennox.

8. Eazy-E

The famous American rapper who was part of N.W.A. back in the day may have left this world too early, at only 30 years, back in 1995, but his legacy remains. While you may be wondering why he’s one of the most searched artists in 2015, you have to remember that the movie Straight Outta Compton came out earlier this year, telling the story of the rap group he starred in, alongside Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, as well as others.

In the movie, Eric Lynn Wright, AKA Eazy-E, is played by Jason Mitchell who was praised by critics for his performance. He even won several awards for the portrayal, which shows that Eazy-E’s story was well painted.

7. N.W.A.

Since we’re on the topic of the movie Straight Outta Compton, the next searched for music artist was N.W.A., which is the group put together by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and the Arabian Prince, a list which later included DJ Yella and MC Ren. Straight Outta Compton, the movie, bears the same name as the first album released by the group back in 1988.

The group got together first back in 1986, but disbanded in 1991, following the departure of Dr. Dre, the D.O.C. and Michel’le for Death Row Records. There’s been an effort to regroup, but it’s never panned out.

Even though there’s been so many years since the group disbanded, the movie that was released earlier this year has brought it all back into the limelight, bringing back old memories for fans from back in the day and teaching new kids what N.W.A. was all about.

6. Fetty Wap

Born Willie Maxwell II, this hip hop artist goes under the stage name of Fetty Wap. He’s been active for about four years, but he rose to fame in 2014 when he released the single Trap Queen. While the song has been around since last year, it was in May 2015 that it became so famous that it reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. This, of course, brought in a whole new lot of fans and along with them, and a whole new lot of searches on Google as people tried to find more information about their favorite new artist.

5. Meghan Trainor

Meghan Trainor used to be a songwriter before she gathered up the courage to record one of her own tracks which was quite a hit – “All About That Bass” – in 2014. This track was followed by others and she’s gotten more and more famous ever since, launching videos and getting nominated for various awards. She won an ASCAP Pop Music Award, two Billboard Music Awards, as well as a YouTube Music Award. More satisfying, perhaps, were the three Grammy nominations she received.

4. Sam Smith

Sam Smith is one of the best new English singers and songwriters. He’s been quite popular for the past few years, particularly after his single “Latch” hit the airwaves in 2012. Then, he’s followed up with numerous singles that have hit the top of the charts, including “Stay with Me,” which brought him international success, expanding his influence beyond the United Kingdom.

Nowadays, he’s given as an example by music shows, his vocals praised by experts and tracks loved by everyone who has any kind of feelings. He was nominated for six Grammy awards, winning four of them in 2015, including for best new artist, record of the year and song of the year.

Most recently, he recorded the theme song for Spectre, the latest James Bond film to reach theaters, called “Writing’s on the Wall.” The track brought him a Guinness World Record for the first Bond theme song to go to number one in the UK.

3. Eagles of Death Metal

This American rock band has been around since 1998, founded by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. While their music is quite popular among genre fans, they’re not exactly the type of mainstream band to attract a gazillion searches on the Internet. Their popularity on Google, however, is tied to a rather unfortunate event – the November Paris attacks.

The terrorists tied to the Islamic State group executed several attacks in France’s capital, including one on the Le Bataclan theatre. On November 13, 2015, Eagles of Death Metal was on stage, holding a concert with thousands of viewers. Terrorists holding automatic rifles, grenades and suicide vests attacked the theatre and killed 89 people, wounding more. The band members made it out safely, but were deeply marked by the event, as were all other survivors. This has all made them one of the top 10 most googled music artists in 2015.

2. Sia

Australian singer and songwriter Sia has been making quite a few waves for the past few years. She’s known for deeply personal songs that are portrayed in videos that actually tell stories, which is something that seems to have been lost a bit in the past few years as artists focused more on the so-called “image videos,” those that are more or less empty of any kind of significance.

In 2015, Sia released several songs and videos, including “Elastic Heart” whose video features young dancer Maddie Ziegler, known from another popular Sia video – “Chandelier” – and actor Shia LaBeouf.

1. Adele

Everyone knows who Adele is, especially after the British singer made it to the top of all possible charts thanks to her heartfelt songs and incredible voice. She’s released several records over the years and she’s won countless Grammy awards already.

This year, however, she’s come back from taking a break to take care of her young son. Her return to the spotlight has not gone unnoticed and people have started up again to search her out, listening to her music, watching her videos, and trying to find out more about her life. Interviews with her were, as always, a delight, as the singer is not exactly known for hiding behind words.

In November, Adele came back with “Hello,” a brand new single that topped the charts instantly. Her new video broke YouTube records, becoming the most viewed video in a day, with 27.7 million views. The previous title owner was Taylor Swift, whose “Bad Blood” attracted 20.1 million views within the first 24 hours.

A few days later, Adele’s new record his the shelves, both online and offline. 25 follows the same title path set by her previous albums. This has all put her at number one in the top 10 most googled music artists in 2015.
