10 Most Annoying Languages to Listen to Someone Speak

How in God’s name are we supposed to find an objective way of identifying the 10 most annoying languages to listen to someone speak? I’ve had my fair share of judging a random dude at the international airport just in the way they speak. I imagine some guy in German speaking about pink fluffy cupcake frosting. It’s not possible, I thought. I’ll beat your search on Google and tell you that in German (and I can’t verify, mind you!), pink fluffy cupcake frosting translates to Rosa flaumige Kuchen Zuckerguss. Yah , not effeminate at all.

There are about 6500 spoken languages in the world, but about one-third of them has fewer than 1.000 speakers.

One of the oldest languages in the world is Tamil. It is spoken by a surprising 78 million people and it is the official language of Sri Lanka and Singapore. But it’s not the most spoken language in the world. Chinese is. It’s spoken by approximately 1,197,000,000 people. The second place for the number of speakers is the Spanish language – with about 414,000,000 speakers. The third is English – with about 335,000,000 speakers.

When it comes to the hardest language for speaking, writing, and reading, one could argue Japanese is the winner because of the unique characters. The Japanese alphabet has three different kanji – a system of Japanese writing using Chinese characters –  which are made of 15,000 characters.

While there are many lists for the easiest or the hardest languages to speak, we decided to create a more interesting list of 10 most annoying languages to listen to someone speak. The research was a very interesting process. We read people’s opinions on forums like Reddit. We can’t say for sure which 10 most annoying languages to listen to someone speak because it all depends, of course, on one person’s taste. But we have a start.

10. Greek

Greek is one of the of the worst sounding languages because they have very long words. People speaking Greek are always finishing their words with vowels. It’s the only remaining language of the Hellenic languages branch of the Indo-European family of languages.

9. Russian

For someone Russian sound melodic and bad to the bone, but for others, it is very annoying because it sounds like the person speaking is aggressive. This is of course according to people on Reddit, but let me tell you – I studied Russian for a few years and I think Russian is amazing. I find out strong and aggressive (in a good way). I also think if it needs to be subtle and gentle, Russian can accommodate. I would argue that a part of why Russian novels are so amazing is that the language avails itself to intensity and drama. So there – some people like Russian, like I do, and others find it annoying.

8. Vietnamese

Many people are making jokes about the Vietnamese language, next on our list of most annoying languages to listen to someone speak, they even say people who talk Vietnamese sound like “choking ducks”. Also, those who are trying to learn this language find themselves in a bind because the language is essentially a modified set of Chinese characters called chữ nôm given vernacular pronunciation. But unlike Chinese, today’s Vietnamese is a Latin alphabet with additional diacritics (basic glyphs) for tones and certain letters.

7. Korean

So what we heard is that for non-speakers, this language sounds like whining. One person said that whenever he hears the language, he couldn’t tell if a grownup was speaking or a child

6. Japanese

A few folks said that Japanese is not only the hardest language but also the most annoying. While listening to a Japanese woman talking you’ll get the feeling that she’s trying to sound cute.

5. Spanish

This isn’t annoying to hear unless you’re a white trash American who has no job prospects and channels his frustration to his guns and hatred for immigrants. Spanish is wonderful if the person speaking it is Mexican. If they’re a Spaniard, they’re European so they suck. Mexicans are awesome cuz they’re our neighbors.

4. French

This is rooted in the hatred for Fresh attitude. These folks think they’re hot shit. French women, French food, French wine, French romance……. so for me hearing it is like being reminded I’m inferior when in reality they’re a bunch of lazies who needed our help in WWII, so they suck and so does their language.

3. German

This one on our list of most annoying languages to listen to someone speak is a very exact language. It also doesn’t help that Germany had such a crappy role in WWII. It’s guilt by association.

2. Arabic

The second place on our list of most annoying languages to listen to someone speak goes to Arabic that is a tough language because of its letters. And it goes from right to left (what!?). Arabs sound very harsh while they talk. Their hard pronunciation of words makes it impossible to admire it or to enjoy listening to it.

1. Chinese

Chinese is a very tonal language which doesn’t appeal to every ear. It also sounds very harsh and annoying especially because they speak loudly. Loud talking gives the impression of yelling which gives a negative impression to one person. We also might be a tad jealous that China seems to be taking over the world while Americans are being ruled by a childish Cheeto.
