5. Tencent Holdings Limited (OTC: TCEHY)

Market cap: $777 billion

Chinese internet company Tencent ranks 5th on the list of the 15 most valuable apps. Tencent is behind instant messengers WeChat and QQ. The company also owns approximately 80% of video game publisher Supercell with video game hits including “Clash Royale”, “Clash of Clans”, and “League of Legends.” On top of that, Tencent has a $259 billion investment in Chinese and international startups in fast-growing industries including electric cars, gaming, entertainment, and social media as of March 2021.

According to the company’s third-quarter report, Tencent Holdings made a total of $18.4 billion in revenue in which Tencent’s value-added service business grew 38% ($10 billion) in 2020, while the online gaming sector grew 45% ($6 billion).

4. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG)

Market cap: $1.42 trillion

California-based Alphabet Inc ranks 4th on the list of the 15 most valuable apps. Alphabet owns the Android app ecosystem and Play Store. Data shows that there are over 3 million Android apps available on Google Play Store. The company is behind one of the world’s most influential apps in the world, YouTube, which alone has over 2 billion monthly active users. The company is also behind famous apps like Google Pay, Google Maps, Google Play, and Google Meet. Google also offers an app-developing platform and cloud service, Google Cloud.

3. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN)

Market cap: $1.556 trillion

Ranking 3rd on our list of the 15 most valuable apps is online retailing company Amazon.com. Aside from the Amazon app, the company designs and publishes entertainment-focused apps including Prime Video, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Music, Amazon Alexa, and IMDb Movies & TV. Being one of the top-performing tech companies in the world, the company also offers Amazon Appstore which is an app-developing platform where users can build Android apps and games for mobile devices, and the Amazon Fire TV with the help of cloud-based tools from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

2. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT)

Market cap: $1.77 trillion

Microsoft ranks 2nd on our list of the most valuable app companies. One of the hottest players in the tech industry is engaged in developing and publishing productivity and video sharing apps including Microsoft Office apps, cloud storage OneDrive, LinkedIn and video conferencing app Skype. On top of that, the company also offers server applications and business solution applications. Microsoft’s app center Visual Studio is a mobile app development platform that allows users to build cloud-connected apps and video games across iOS, Android, and Windows devices. 

In the second quarter of 2021, Microsoft earned a revenue of $43.1 billion. Revenues from productivity and business processes was $13.4 billion. Microsoft recently announced its plans to build two data centers with a $2 million budget to expand its data center capacity as the demand for its cloud service, Microsoft Azure, continues to soar. Topping the list of the 15 most valuable app companies is Apple. The company enjoys its profits from designing and manufacturing mobile and media devices, software, and applications. Apple’s top apps include Apple Books, Apple Pay, iMovie, iTunes U, Apple Store, Apple Music, and Apple Developer. The company also offers a subscription-based Apple Developer Program where developers can build their application and distribute it to the App Store. 

In the first quarter of 2021, Apple Inc earned a revenue of $111.4 billion, up 21% year-over-year. Shares of AAPL increased by 74.16% over the past twelve months.
