To determine the most credible sightings, we referred to twelve credible lists of UFO encounters from websites like National Geographic, LiveScience, and HuffinghtonPost and developed a points system. Sightings received one point each time they were mentioned, so although there’s a points possible amount of 12, the highest points received was only 8. Clearly, there’s a huge variety of UFO sightings that have happened throughout the world and throughout time.

Though one observation is that all of our top sightings took place in the United States, with runners-up in Brazil and Australia. The only explanation we can think of is that this must be a favorite hovering spot for aliens. So Americans, beware.

Another observation is that the majority of our sightings took place in the 20^th century. Although the 21^st century is only just beginning, you can’t help but wonder if as many UFO occurrences will dominate this century as they did the last.

But most of us are too smart to believe it’s actually real. They’re simple camera glitches, hallucinations, Nasa space-crafts or shooting stars. But these theories are surprisingly realistic. You may become a believer, or, at least, be highly fascinated, by the time you’re finished reading the 10 most credible UFO sightings in the world.

10. Illinois Triangle UFO Sighting – 2000 

Points: 2

Multiple police officers claim to have spotted a large, unidentified triangular aircraft above Lebanon, Illinois in the early morning hours of January 5, 2000. They tracked the unknown object throughout the sky, radioing back and forth. Something else fishy? Scott Air Force Base was only two miles away from this curious object’s flight path.

9. Mansfield, Ohio UFO Sighting – 1973

This was not only a sighting, but also a near collision with an unidentified flying object. A four-man helicopter crew narrowly missed crashing into this lighted object midair, but that’s not all. They then lost control of their aircraft and climbed from 1,700 to 3,500 feet in a matter of seconds. Eventually, they gained control and brought the helicopter back down and away from the supposed UFO, no doubt as fast as it would take them.

8. Loch Raven Dam UFO Sighting – 1958

At this dam north of Baltimore, Maryland, two men travelling in a car spotted a bright, egg-shaped object hovering eerily above the bridge. Then, the car went dead, as if it had been turned off. After hiding behind their car as they watched the unwelcome phenomenon ascend into the sky again, it finally disappeared. Not surprisingly, their car started right back up again.

7. New Jersey Turnpike – 2001

Another police officer was the observer of this aircraft, which hovered over New Jersey, near New York City throughout the night, and early hours of the morning. Another witness claimed he saw “16 golden-orange colored lights, several in a V-type formation. Others were scattered around the V” for about 15 minutes, according to National Geographic. 

6. Tinley Park UFO Sighting – 2004-2006

Not one but two sightings occurred at this town in Illinois in 2004, one on Halloween. This object was said to include 3 colored lights moving in unison, in a triangular shape. Multiple sightings of the same type occurred again in October of 2005 and 2006. Residents best prepare for an abduction.

5. Trumbull County UFO Sighting – 1986 

Points: 3

Several 911 calls were received to report an unknown flying specimen over this county in Ohio. An officer drove out to investigate, when his car suddenly went dead. When he looked up, the bright lights of the UFO filled his vision. Then just like in number 8 in the 10 most credible UFO sightings in the world, when the object disappeared, his cruiser worked again as normal, though he was unable to follow the mysterious object.

4. White House and Capitol UFO Sighting – 1952

Not one but an entire fleet of unidentified objects hovered over the White House and Capitol building on this fateful night in 1952. They were also detected on various radar screens. And the movements made by these crafts were much too irregular to be any ordinary aircraft.

A UFO was believed to have crashed in the middle of a ranch in this town. Metal objects were found scattered about and, what’s more, a giant trench was gouged into the ground nearby.

JAL flight 1628 was peacefully grazing the skies above Alaska one day when it came upon a mysterious encounter. The pilot who first noticed thought it was a military aircraft, but soon realized he was dealing with two objects, both flying right along with him. Before the cockpit knew it, they were face to face with these now brightly shining objects, and felt the warmth on their faces. They disappeared soon after a United Airlines flight was sent to investigate. When the aliens saw they couldn’t one-up on the number of aircraft anymore, they must have left intimidated.

1. Phoenix Lights UFO Sighting – 1997

This sighting is so famous it even has its own website. It also took place over the course of two days, and was witnessed by several thousand. On the edge of Tuscan, Arizona, near the Nevada line, witnesses claim to have seen a black V-shaped specimen with lights.
