I’m 100% gay and 1000% gay for movies, so let’s take a look at the 9 best gay movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

I remember growing up watching movies like Paris is Burning, The Broken Hearts Club, UrbaniaLost and DeliriousIf These Walls Could Talk 2, The Laramie Project (I know it’s a play), Angels in America (YES I KNOW it’s a play) and Beautiful Thing. I just absolutely reveled in stories about my people, LGBTQ people–even if they often died tragically as was the wont of pre-2010 gay movies. This was way back before streaming was an option so I was at the mercy of whatever HBO programming or the IFC channel decided to throw on–and, of course, Kim’s Video. I lived in the Broadway location for a short time when I had to study movies.

Movies–and the art world in general– have always been a great place to explore gay themes, especially before it was as commonly accepted to be gay.  Now, of course, gay issues and characters are in mainstream films and other media–gay art is less striking or controversial than it once was to more conservative audiences–and more widely viewed. Mobile devices, along with Netflix and other streaming services have completely altered the way we consume media.

Therefore now more than ever, do you have access to an incredible range of films. You can scan through libraries of movies for classics from the ’90s era New Queer Cinema to watch films like Go Fish, Watermelon Woman, Poison, and The Living End. Or you can dive even deeper into gay cinematic roots with The Children’s Hour, The Boys in the Band–or even Some Like It Hot.

What even is a “gay” movie?  Is it a movie with gay main characters or centered on gay themes–especially before such things became mainstream? Yes. Is it a movie with an actor or director who is gay in real life that doesn’t contain gay main characters, relationships or interactions? No. Hopefully, that helps as we take a look at the  9 best gay movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.

Before we do, we would be remiss without also mentioning a few more classic gay movies like Pariah, Brokeback Mountain, But I’m A Cheerleader, and The Kids Are Alright. And if you have kids or you’re interested in gay geography you should also check out 10 Best Cities for LGBT Families.

As for the 9 best gay movies streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. We decided that the fairest method of identifying the best gay movies is using Rotten Tomatoes as a rating source because it is a compilation of many different reviews from different reviewers and different cities across the county. Then we needed to identify out of those top-rated movies which of those were on which of the streaming platforms.

Initially, we decided to use JustWatch. Its database is fine when it comes to Netflix and Amazon Prime movies, however, it isn’t useful when it comes to determining whether gay movies are streaming on Hulu. That’s why we used Ranker to identify the gay movies that are streaming on Hulu.

Our methodology identified 9 of the best gay movies that are streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Great gay movies like, Shank, Latter Days, Boy Culture, Free Fall, Mysterious Skin, Pride, and Maurice didn’t make our list because they aren’t streaming on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
