Curious what the most popular video games of all-time are? The video game industry is one of the most lucrative ones around and countless new games are released every year. But which ones have proven themselves to be the most popular amongst gamers? Well, what better way to judge how popular a certain game is than by looking at how many people bought it?

The 10 video games in our countdown were ranked according to their gross sales and it might come as somewhat of a surprise to see what people have been buying. Wondering if your favorite video game made in the top ten? Let’s take a look at the countdown.

No. 10: Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare

The fourth game in the Call of Duty series no longer focuses on historical battles, like the previous versions, but, instead, sets its action in modern times. One of the best multiplayer shooting games around.

No. 9: Mario Kart

Mario is one of the beloved characters of our childhood and Nintendo set out to revive the little Italian with a mustache when it created Mario Kart. Not surprisingly, the game became an instant hit amongst video gamers, especially due to the plastic wheel sold as an accessory which makes the feeling of driving a kart so much more real.

No. 8: Wii Fit Plus

Is there anything better than combining a video game with a full at-home exercising routine? Apparently, in the eyes of the American Heart Association, there isn’t, as Wii Fit Plus is the only video game currently being endorsed by the organization.

No. 7: Guitar Hero World Tour

Guitar Hero World Tour was released in a time when this genre of video games was starting to lose its appeal amongst gamers. However, this Activision-Blizzard release managed to make an impressive comeback and even climbed on the 7th spot of the most popular video games of all-time.

No. 6: Wii Play

It is not exactly the collection of mini-games that are part of the Wii Play that made this video game so popular. Rather, it is the controller, or the Wiimote, sold with it that hit the right spot with consumers.

No. 5: Rock Band

What made Rock Band stand out amongst other video games from the same genre and helped it gained so much popularity? Its developers introduced an extra feature, drums, and also gave players the ability to choose someone as lead singer.

No. 4: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

While the first installment of Modern Warfare barely made our top ten, on the very last position, its sequel, Modern Warfare 2, faired much better. Activision once again outdid itself when it developed this video game and one thing is certain: Call of Duty will continue to enchant gamers worldwide for a long time to come.

No. 3: Wii Fit

Although less advanced than the Fit Plus version, which is also featured in our countdown, Wii Fit became the fastest and best selling Wii game soon after its release.

No. 2: Call of Duty: Black Ops

The latest Call of Duty game manages to surpass all previous versions and is currently the best selling game of its kind. Although fans were somewhat circumspect after Call of Duty’s original creators were fired, Activision wowed gamers once again when it released Black Ops.

No. 1: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

At the time of its release, Legends of Rock was the only game of the genre with online multiplayer options. The best selling game in the industry comes from a long line of Guitar Hero series which, ironic enough, is no longer being produced.
