7 Real, High-Paying Jobs You Can Do From Home

It’s an undeniable truth that many of the supposed high-paying jobs you can do from home which you see plastered on message boards and in comments sections across the internet are nothing but fanciful scams; and sadly, not even very convincing ones at that.

You know the typical spiel: “Hey! My mom makes $85 an hour from home working for Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and you can too!! Just follow this link to some glossy website that will only charge you $49.99 to give you access to these A-M-A-Z-I-N-G positions!!”  Ok, the second part goes unsaid, but it’s there sure enough, like it was written in granite.

Yet despite that, and the fact that in many ways the internet is still a bit of a Wild West abundant in scams and littered with broken dreams, it’s truer than ever that it’s also a place where people of many different professions can now find professional, gainful employment, and make a lot of money while at it. Some of these could even fit nicely into our previous listing of some of the best summer jobs for college students.

Nor is the internet the only game in town. While we now associate working from home with the internet, there are numerous other high-paying jobs you can do from home that don’t require the internet at all. Increasingly, people and companies are learning that they don’t need the high overhead (financially speaking, the actual ceiling may or may not be any higher than your home’s) of a traditional office to get things done.

Let’s begin our tour of the possible home work environments that await anyone brave enough, bold enough, and confident enough in their ability to not get distracted by cat videos for an hour without anyone to oversee them (or alternatively, by their own cat). These then are some of the most prominent high-paying jobs you can do from home.

6. Graphic Designer

Many people fancy themselves as creative, and a graphic design position is a great one to put those artistic talents to the test. While there’s a lot of competition for such positions, especially on the lower end of the market, which can degrade the resulting compensation, a quality graphic designer will have high-paying clients banging down his or her door in the hopes they’ll design them a memorable logo, banner, or other work of art.

5. Online Reseller

With the rise of online auction sites like eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY), the profession of online reseller has emerged as a very legitimate way to make money. Whether it’s through running a drop-shipping business, buying out the local estate sales and selling their goodies online, or buying low from other auctions and selling high (there’s your first lesson in reselling, you’re welcome), there is plenty of potential to make a good deal of money selling things online.

4. Blogger

Fancy yourself a wordsmith? Get in line. No, really, get behind me, I don’t take kindly to usurpers. I’ll try to be gracious, but seriously, back off. Ok, ok, I’m only having a go at you. The truth is, if you’ve got writing talent, we’d love to hear from you here at Insider Monkey; go ahead and send us your resume. Aside from us, there are thousands upon thousands of websites (not nearly as good as ours though) in need of content for all manner of purposes. If you’re a good writer with decent typing speed, you can make a nice living banging away on the keys.

3. Virtual Assistant

Secretaries have in many cases given way to virtual assistants, which perform many of the same functions as a personal assistant, but remotely. Virtual assistants perform tasks for their charges such as bookkeeping, transcribing, and planning, all from their home office/bedroom/garage/backyard (preferably on a non-rainy day)/you-get-the-idea.

2. Medical Specialist

Increasingly, both doctors and nurses are working from home and providing consulting services and seeing patients without ever leaving their property. Some of these work freelance, while others work for major firms like Imaging on Call performing tele-radiology and other diagnostic evaluations.

1. IT Specialist

One of the first true work from home professions was that of the IT specialist, and it has not only remained a vital position these many years later, but is now more important than ever. Be they system administrators, programmers, or software engineers, there’s never been a greater need for workers in this field, or an easier time for them to work from home making a lot of money.
