6 Best Smartphones with AMOLED Display

If you want a smartphone with a quality display, then you should consider buying one from our list of best smartphones with AMOLED display.

Remember when we all had smartphones without color display and it didn’t matter as much since we didn’t know better? Well, now we know better, and it isn’t only important to have a color display on our phone. Now we want a big screen, higher resolution, and brighter colors. Luckily, we can have it all and we even get to choose the finer details as well. The technology is so advanced now that there are smartphones with two displays, although that experiment didn’t work great. When it comes to smartphone displays, the manufacturers now mainly use two types of technology; IPS LCD and AMOLED. Each of these technologies has its pros and cons.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology has been present for a long time now.  The display contains liquid crystals which are light up with a single source of the backlight. IPS LCD is a better version of LCD with a faster response time. The advantages of IPS LCD are more natural colors, better performance under direct sunlight and cheaper cost of production. The disadvantages are that the dark colors seem gray, lack of contrast and lower quality of pictures. AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) on the other hand uses the organic material on TFT (thin film transistor). This way, each pixel can be individually illuminated. The advantages of AMOLED technology are that it allows producing thinner displays, has no restrictions when it comes to display size, black colors are darker and consumes less power in theory. The disadvantages include poor performance under the sunlight and shorter lifetime. You may encounter term Super AMOLED, which represents advanced AMOLED technology that allows thinner devices by integrating actual screen and touch screen in just one layer. While we are talking about screens, there might be some of you who like to tap their smartphone displays with a stylus rather than your fingers. If that’s you, check out our list of 8 Best Smartphones with a Stylus.

In order to create our list of best smartphones with AMOLED display, we headed over to GSM Arena and looked for smartphones that had the highest screen resolutions, 500+ PPI (pixels per inch) pixel density, packed Octa-core processors and had 4GB+ RAM and 32BG+ of storage. Our search resulted in finding more than 20 smartphones. After discarding those that are still to be released or not available anywhere but China and the variations of the same model, we ended up with 6 best. They were then ranked according to the overall impression. Let’s take a look at our list of best smartphones with AMOLED display.

6. Meizu Pro 6 Plus

Display Size: 5.7 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels (~515 PPI pixel density)

We will begin with one of the bigger smartphones. The display is Super AMOLED and the low PPI pixel density is attributed to its large screen. You can opt between 64GB or 128GB of storage and you’ll get 4GB of RAM, Dual SIM, 12MP rear camera and 5MP front camera. The smartphone is especially praised for its innovative software.

5. Huawei Honor Magic

Display Size: 5.09 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels (~577 PPI pixel density)

Huawei did a really good job with Honor Magic’s AMOLED display. Its PPI pixel density matches even the Samsung smartphones, and that says a lot. You’ll get great specifications including 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage alongside the 12MP dual rear camera and 8MP front camera.

4. Huawei Mate 9 Pro

Display Size: 5.5 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels (~534 PPI pixel density)

Released at the start of the year, Huawei Mate 9 Pro that ranks 4th on the list of best smartphones with AMOLED display comes in two different versions. One has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while the other one has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The rest of the characteristics are pretty much the same. Besides Octa-core processor, you’ll get a dual rear camera of 20 MP +12 MP and 8MP front camera.  Just like Honor Magic, Mate 9 Pro also has a regular AMOLED Display.

3. vivo Xplay5

Display Size: 5.43 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels (~541 PPI pixel density)

Let’s take a break from Huawei models on our list of best smartphones with AMOLED display. vivo Xplay5 packs 4GB, but if that isn’t enough for you, then you can get the Elite model with 6GB of RAM. Both come with 128GB of storage alongside 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras. The display is Super AMOLED.

2. Samsung Galaxy S7

Display Size: 5.1 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels (~577 PPI pixel density)

Personally, taking all things into consideration, I think Galaxy S7 could well be the best smartphone ever made. The display is, of course, impeccable and the proof that Samsung really got the best of Super Amoled technology. 4GB of RAM and 32/64GB of storage may not seem as much, but you’ll get a smartphone with one of the best cameras around.

1. Samsung Galaxy S8

Display Size: 5.8 inches
Display Resolution: 1440 x 2960 pixels (~570 PPI pixel density)

We will finish our list of best smartphones with AMOLED display with the best smartphone released in 2017. Samsung again did a great job in all departments, but the Super AMOLED display on this model is something special. The screen is 0.7 inches bigger than in Galaxy S7, but the PPI pixel density didn’t take a large hit. Also, the resolution is a bit higher. Compared to the latest releases, 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM seem low at first, but ask yourself, do you really need more? If the answer is yes, you can always get 6.2 inches Galaxy S8+ that has 128GB of storage and 6GB or RAM.
