We checked another credible source, NHS, that had pretty similar answers. So, relationships, employment, mental health can lead to suicidal thoughts.

Is depression the leading cause of suicidal death? Well, we didn’t dig for information like that as there are lots of other factors that could be the reason. And what is the state with highest depression rate? Numbers are constantly changing, but Alaska ranks amongst the top of the worst depressed states in 2017. The numbers of suicides are big – 25.9 citizens per 100.000 capita should really concern us. So, should we blame depression or Alaska’s alcoholism rate? We decided not to go that deep and leave that for another research but only focus on the highest suicidal states.

So, what credible source could provide us with the latest information on highest suicidal states in America in 2018? We visited CDC, and fortunately, their health statistics were what we needed. They offer full statistics, with a map of the states as well. Although CDC will release its report for the year 2018 later this year, we still managed to create our list using their information for 2015 and 2016. Plus, we checked the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, for the suicidal rate for each state in 2017. The trend was continued for nearly every state, so we used these sources to predict the highest suicidal states in the US in 2018. Our methodology for this list is next – we took the numbers of suicides per 100.000 people for the last three years and calculated the average value for each state. Finally, we ranked them according to the results.

16. Missouri

This state has ups and downs through the years, as its suicidal rate was 17.1 in 2015, following 18.4 in 2016 and down to 16.9. With an average of 17.4, it takes the last position on our list, but Missouri needs to improve in future.

15. Oregon

The stats for Oregon are almost same for each year – 17.7 for 2017 and 17.8 for the previous two years. The average for Oregon is 17.7, enough for the 15th position and enough as a signal that something needs to be changed.

14. North Dakota

This state’s suicidal stats vary from year to year, as North Dakota had 17.5 suicides in 2015, which increased to 19 in 2016 and down to 17.4 in 2017. Its average is way above the national average, and with 17.9 suicides this state got the 14th place.

13. Arizona

From 18.2 suicides per 100.000 capita in 2015, Arizona went to 18.1 in 2017, which is not a good improvement for a state like this. Its average suicidal rate is 18, which needs to be taken seriously as Arizona is the 13th state with most suicides.

12. West Virginia

It seems like 2016 stands out for this state with a suicidal rate of 19.3, as in 2015 and 2016 that rate was 17.4 and 17.5 accordingly. The average for this state is 18,06, which should be considered as a sign that something is wrong.

11. Arkansas

Arkansas made a little improvement in 2016 as its suicidal rate per 100.000 capita was 18.2, but then it got back again to 19.1. The average of 18.8 suicides brought Arkansas to the 11th position on our list of highest suicidal states in America in 2018.

10. Nevada

Similar to other states, Nevada reached its pick in 2016 with 21.4 suicides per 100.00 capita. In 2017, that rate went back to 18,3, just 0.1 less than in 2015. Nevada has an average 19.3 suicides, which makes it the ten state in the US with the highest rate.

9. Colorado

Unbelievable 19.8 citizens per 100.000 capita decided to commit a suicide, which is quite serious. That rank went from 19.5 in 2015, increased to 20.5 in 2016 and get down to 19.4 in 2017. There is an improvement, but that is not even close to enough.

8. South Dakota

The suicide rate for this state varied through the years, but it’s constantly near the average of 20.3 suicides per 100.000 citizens. In 2015 that number was 20.4, in 2016 was 20.2 and it got to 20.5 in 2017. Without a doubt, South Dakota is one of the highest suicidal states in America.

7. Oklahoma

Similar to the previous, the suicide rate through the years is around 20 suicides per 100.000 capita. In 2015 that number was 20.3, then increased to 21 in 2016, and get down to 20.4 in 2017. It has an average of 20.5, which is something we need to worry about.

6. Idaho

When you just thought there was an improvement in 2016 with the suicide rate of 21.4 per 100.000 citizens, that number went back as it was 22.1 in 2015. With an average of 21.8, Idaho is one of the highest suicidal states in the US.

5. Utah

The average of 22.2 suicides per 100.000 capita, suggest us that there aren’t improvements in the last few years. This rate was 22.4 in 2015, and it went down to 21.8 in 2016, but in 2017 we got the same rate from 2015.

4. New Mexico

We don’t know the reasons for these numbers, but an average of 23.2 suicides per 100.000 citizens should concern everyone. This rate was 23.7 in 2015, then 22.5 in 2016 and reached 23.5 in 2017.

3. Montana

We are down to the big three – the suicide rate for this state is constantly over 25, it is no wonder how it got an average of 25.3. The suicide rate per 100.000 citizens used to be 25.3 in 2015; then it hit the record of 25.9 in 2016 and 25.2 in 2017.

2. Alaska

This state ranks second on our list of highest suicidal states in America in 2018. It is constantly at the top, this time with an average of 26.5 suicides per 100.000 capita. This rate was 26.9 in 2015, went down to 25.8 in 2016 which didn’t last long, as in 2017 the rate was 26.8.

1. Wyoming

Definitively, Wyoming is the state with the most suicides, and the average rate of 27.1 per 100.000 citizens proves that. In 2015 this rate was 28, and when everyone thought it is going on better as in 2016 went down to 25.2 the unexpected happened – the suicide rate for 2017 went to 28.2 suicides.
