14 Crazy Facts About Hawaii

Crazy facts are fun, and here are some crazy facts about Hawaii. Hawaii is a lush grouping of islands teeming with rainforests sprinkling the mountainous region, billowing volcanoes that sometimes still erupt with fury and without warning, and with some of the most spectacular coastal locales you can find in the USA, and even the world.

But every place has its quirks right? Surely nothing is “normal.” What is normal anyway? Hawaii is a beautiful archipelago made up of eight incredible islands all displaying their own special beauty. This is the only US state that does not have another body of land attached to it, it’s completely surrounded by water, in fact it’s thousands of mile away from the USA. If you’re a coffee lover, then you’re in luck because this state is the only one able to cultivate the bean, so grab a cup or two because you’ll need plenty of energy to explore and discover this beautiful location.

Have you ever thought we have too many letters in the English language? Well, the Hawaiians decided that 13 letters was enough and no matter what you say, your word will end with a vowel. Pretty easy!

13.Volcanoes

Mauna Loa, one of the world’s largests volcanoes, and Kilauea Volcano, are both located on the Big Island. What’s weird about the volcanoes on Big Island? Well, Big Island keeps getting bigger and bigger! The eruptions of the volcanos cause the island to grow larger by acres and acres each year.

12. Life expectancy

Speaking about getting bigger, Hawaii has the longest life expectancy in the country, so the population is surely growing. People’s life expectancy is over 81 years old.

11. Spam

You would think that the seafood is so delicious and fresh and there is surely enough fish for feasts, but the product that is most consumed in Hawaii that’s the most per capita in The States? Is spam. Yep, spam, that stuff in a can. What is it?! Go to Hawaii and find out, you will have to eat it where they make it the best if you want to try it.

Hawaii is, of course, known for its beaches. What color is your ideal beach? Golden or white perhaps? How about trying yellow, green, red, and black in Hawaii? That will switch things up a bit!

9. Surfboards

Surfs up in Hawaii, dudes. We all know that. Want to know why? Because the Polynesians that came over to this lovely archipelago thousands of years ago invented it here. Their boards were more like mini boats at 150 pounds, but while we’re thankful they invented it, we don’t need to feel guilty about advancing our tools for enjoying the sport.

8. Last state

Guess who the baby of the USA is? Yep, Hawaii. On August 21st, 1959 Hawaii was the last state entered into the nation.

7. Hula dance for men

The hula dance is often performed by bikini clad women with grass skirts nowadays, but it came about by strictly trained men who were “taught” by Luka, a revered Hawaiian god.

6. Most southern state

Don’t forget about Hawaii! We know it the most southern state  in The United States, but it’s there floating around the Pacific looking all pretty.

4. Rain

Kauai is home to Mt. Waialeale which is considered to be the rainiest place on earth amounting to an average of nearly 500 inches of rain a year!

3. Oldest Cathedral in the USA

Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu is a Catholic Cathedral, and the oldest in the USA that is still in use. It was built in 1843.

 

2. Isolation

Hawaii got most of its seeds and plants thanks to mother nature’s blowing winds, turbulent seas, or gift-barring birds. It’s considered the most isolated population that’s on earth right now with North America being over 2,000 miles away.

1. Lei

We all know it’s a “thing” to get lei in Hawaii, curious where it came from? A lei is given as a sign of affection and it’s often given to a chief to signify that, but also opposing chiefs would make them together to make peace with each other.
