6 Female Authors With Male Pen Names

6. Alice Bradley Sheldon

The America author Alice Bradley Sheldon signed her works under the name of James Tiptree for as long as she lived. It was only ten years after she died that her true identity was revealed. She wanted to distance herself from her past works and also gain recognition in the literary world so she chose a male pen name. According to The Culture Trip, she said that she wanted a camouflage feeling that a man would be less observed and that she had “too many experiences in my life of being the first woman in some damned occupation.” Alice, or Tiptree, is famous for science fiction works and wrote short stories and novels and was awarded several times for her excellent work. One of her best-known novellas is The Girl Who Was Plugged In.
