6 Female Authors With Male Pen Names

5. Mary Ann Evans

Mary Ann Evans wrote under the name of George Eliot during the Victorian era and due to her tremendous success, we included her in our list of 6 female authors with male pen names.  In order to succeed as a writer she needed to distance herself from her female identity, so her first published work was an essay titled “Silly Novels by Lady Novelists”. Her intention was to criticize female writers and thus ensure that her work is taken seriously later on. She wrote Adam Bede in 1859 and since it was a successful novel, she revealed her true name but continued to publish her pen name nevertheless.
