DoorDash Inc. (NASDAQ:DASH) has been delivering strong topline growth, but the stock is still searching for a footing. It traded at $191.77 by close of play on October 5, which leaves the stock down 15.3% in 2026. Over the last 52 weeks, the pullback is more pronounced as it has lagged the S&P 500’s 15.78% gains by a long stretch.
The company has so far captured close to 67% of the meal delivery market within the U.S., managing an extensive network of over 900,000 partner merchant locations. Cash generation capacity of the business is a clear positive, as the company has delivered $2.83 billion in operating cash flow during the last twelve months. Rapid Topline Growth but Falling Shares
DoorDash posted 35.60% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2 2026, including Deliveroo’s contribution. Excluding Deliveroo, revenue grew approximately 24%, bringing trailing twelve-month revenue to $15.89 billion. This reflects on solid demand across its delivery platform. The pace of growth is impressive for a business of this scale, carrying a market capitalization of $82.01 billion.
The company is pushing beyond restaurant delivery operations through multi-million spending across additional channels. The company plans to acquire Wonder’s Grubhub Campus Dining for $300 million, with the transaction expected to close during the first half of 2027. Following the acquisition, DoorDash plans on expanding the campus dining ordering capabilities across additional avenues such as hotels and stadiums.

Thin Margins Meet Big Expectations
Profitability margins are stable but not strikingly high. DoorDash has yielded 3.86% operating margin over the last 12 months. It derived support through non-operating items as net margin was recorded at 5.29%. Leverage does not pose any near-term risk, as the balance sheet appears highly manageable given the company’s cash flow profile. The debt-to-equity ratio stands at a moderate level of 33.28%, based on a total debt of $3.3 billion.
DoorDash generated $2.14 billion in trailing twelve-month free cash flow, compared with $2.83 billion in operating cash flow. This supports the company’s financial flexibility, although continued investment in expansion could weigh on future cash generation. Investors need to pay attention to DoorDash’s $425 million bet that could expand the company into controlled, high-density venues.
Valuation Debate: Growth Premium or Overpriced Delivery Stock?
Valuation is where the debate begins. The stock is trading at a steep trailing P/E ratio of 99.09x. However, a forward multiple of 38.02x suggests earnings growth expectations, at a time when profitability remains modest. The large gap between the two multiple could spike interest of a few investors.
Short sentiment indicators remain reasonably muted. The stock carries a 4.01% short interest, which does not reflect on a heavily bearish positioning. With a short ratio of 4.16, there is no imminent risk of a squeeze for short sellers. Such figures imply that the bearish run for DoorDash was not due to aggressive shorting. Instead, it was driven more by valuation compression and rotation.
Institutional Sentiment
Data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey still shows significant amount of institutional interest in the stock. This is despite a drop in the number of hedge funds holding positions. As per 13F filings, hedge fund ownership declined from 117 funds in Q1 2026 to 107 funds in the following quarter.
Sc Us (ttgp) is the largest institutional stakeholder in the company, as per Yahoo Finance database, holding 31.6 million shares. This translates into 8.64% ownership in the company. Other notable stakeholders include BlackRock and Vanguard Capital Management with 7.34% and 6.68% ownerships, respectively.
Conclusion
Overall, DoorDash offers an appealing mix of rapid topline growth, robust cash flows, and a rich valuation range. Its underperformance relative to the overall market may entice some investors who anticipate underlying margins to expand. On the other hand, those focused on valuation might prefer to hold for now, till they see some notable evidence of earnings leverage. Going forward, execution on profitability would most likely decide which camp is proven right. For now, DoorDash appears better suited to a watchlist than an immediate buy, unless investors are comfortable paying a premium for its growth prospects.
