Why the Bull Case Extends Beyond Ride-Hailing

Bull thesis for Uber is supported by mid- to high-teen growth figures for the company’s Monthly Active Platform Consumers and Total Trips. Its inclination toward hybrid mobility networks through strategic collaborations across the segment, sets the stage for developing a comprehensive suite of autonomous-driving solutions.

Uber’s autonomous vehicle strategy involves more than 30 partners, along with a $10 billion commitment toward infrastructure and offtake investments. It aims to leverage expertise of other AV providers instead of developing self-driving capabilities in-house.

Finally, the Delivery Hero transaction offers significant potential to scale up its global delivery operations. It would result in access to 99 markets post-acquisition, along with $236 billion in pro forma gross bookings. The realized synergies would strengthen the company’s competitive position against rivals like DoorDash and Just Eat Takeaway.

Uber’s Growth Story Faces a Reality Check

Managing several growth initiatives simultaneously could lead to stretched resources for Uber. The company faces several headwinds tied to stiff competition within local commerce delivery, driver supply cost dynamics in urban centers, and consumer discretionary spending.

Additionally, the volumetric growth in gross bookings does not guarantee sustainable earnings. Despite strong bookings growth, the company’s revenue narrowly missed consensus expectations during the recently reported second quarter. Topline figure stood at $14.19 billion compared to $14.24 billion analyst consensus. This indicates that momentum across its gross bookings did not translate into an equivalent revenue beat.

Competitive landscape is also intensifying for Uber, as Tesla begins Cybercab production and prepares for deployment in its Robotaxi fleet, while Waymo has secured $16 billion financing for its own growth. Together, these moves could reduce Waymo’s reliance on Uber while increasing competitive pressure on Uber’s AV platform.

Institutional Sentiment

Data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey still shows significant amount of institutional interest in Uber. This is despite a marginal drop in the number of hedge funds holding positions. As per 13F filings, hedge fund ownership declined from 153 funds in Q1 2026 to 151 funds in the following quarter. Low short interest of 2.21% of shares outstanding, suggesting very nominal amount of bets against the stock.

BlackRock is the largest institutional stakeholder in the company, as per Yahoo Finance database. It holds 145.97 million shares, translating into 7.15% ownership in the stock. Other notable stakeholders include Vanguard Capital Management and Capital Research Global Investors with 6.51% and 6.40% ownerships respectively.

Way Forward

Going forward, Uber needs to ensure conversion of additional gross bookings into durable earnings growth. This becomes more relevant following the second quarter, when Uber’s third-quarter earnings outlook came in below analyst expectations. Several other factors will determine whether its premium valuation holds, including the Delivery Hero integration and defending its AV platform against Tesla’s Cybercab.
