Microsoft Stock is a ‘Sell’ as Markets Bounce Back

Distillate Capital recently released its Q1 2020 Investor Letter, a copy of which you can download below. The Distillate Capital’s U.S. Fundamental Stability & Value (U.S. FSV) strategy posted a return of -19.39% for the quarter (net of fees), outperforming its benchmark, the S&P 500 Index which returned -19.60% in the same quarter. You should check out Distillate Capital’s top 5 stock picks for investors to buy right now, which could be the biggest winners of the stock market crash. There weren’t a lot of funds who could deliver these kinds of returns without shorting the market or using aggressive put options.

In the said letter, Distillate Capital highlighted a few stocks and Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of them. Microsoft is a technology company. Year-to-date, Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock gained 14.5% and on May 27th it had a closing price of $181.81. Here is what Distillate Capital said:

“For several quarters, our weight in MSFT has been declining following strong performance, but after beating the S&P 500 Index by over 25% last quarter, the relative valuation has weakened such that the stock no longer warrants inclusion in the portfolio.”

In Q1 2020, the number of bullish hedge fund positions on Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock increased by about 24% from the previous quarter (see the chart here), so a number of other hedge fund managers don’t seem to agree with MSFT’s downside potential. Our calculations showed that Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) is ranked #2 among the 30 most popular stocks among hedge funds.

The top 10 stocks among hedge funds returned 185% since the end of 2014 and outperformed the S&P 500 Index ETFs by more than 109 percentage points. We know it sounds unbelievable.
