British Royal Family Tree: The New Line of Succession

British Royal Family tree: curious who’s in the line of succession with the latest birth? The British Royal Family is probably the most well-known royal family in the world. It is often in the middle of the media’s attention through different events which mark its history. In recent days, the media’s fervor has surrounded the birth of the third in line to the British throne, the son of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, The Prince of Cambridge: George Alexander Louis.

In the light of this major event, we should take a look at the entire royal family, in a manner similar to how we’ve analyzed the most controversial U.S. Presidential election results in history.

Members of the Royal Family belong to the House of Windsor, a name chosen by King George V instead of the previous Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (the name was changed because the British Empire was at war with Germany at that time and the royal family needed a more British house name instead of one showing the German ancestry of the Royal Family).

The monarch in the UK has an important role, even though Constitutional Monarchy (the form of government in the UK) establishes that the Sovereign does not play an executive or political role. The monarch is representing the state on an international level, and is supporting and promoting the national identity.

Queen Elizabeth II, the current monarch of Great Britain, succeeded to the throne in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI and was crowned in 1953. She was born on 21 April 1926. The Queen is married to Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and has four children.

Playing an important role in the life of the Great Britain and the Commonwealth (an organization of 54 states, most of which have been colonies of the British Empire), the Queen–during 61 years of her rule–has attended thousands of events, receptions and ceremonies.

Currently, the list of succession in the British Royal Family tree includes 48 members of the royal family, including the aforementioned newborn Prince. Let’s take a look at the top 10 on the following pages:

No. 5 The Duke of York

Prince Andrew, christened Andrew Albert Christian Edward, was born on 19 February 1960. At the time of his birth, he was the second in the line of succession. He married Sarah Ferguson in 1886, but got divorced ten years later. Aside from his royal duties, he worked as Special Representative for International Trade and Investment until 2011. Also, he has the commander rank and rear admiral rank in the Royal Navy.

No. 4 Prince Henry of Wales

No. 3 The Prince of Cambridge

George Alexander Louis is the youngest representative of the royal family. The son of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge was born on July 22, 2013. The name of the baby was not revealed only until a couple of days later. Interestingly, before the name was announced, bookmakers were accepting bets on the name, and all three names were among the favorites, “George” being on the top of the list.

No. 2 The Duke of Cambridge

Prince William (William Arthur Philip Louis), was born on 21 June 1982 and is the elder son of Prince Charles and the departed Princess Diana. He married Catherine Middleton in April 2011 and received the title of Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.

No. 1 The Prince of Wales

Charles Philip Arthur George was born on 14 November 1948 and is the eldest son of the monarch, which makes him the first on the line of succession. Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, but the marriage failed and the couple divorced in 1996 (Princess Diana passed away a year later in a car accident). Prince Charles went to the Trinity College, Cambridge after secondary school, instead of joining the Royal Army Force as was the tradition in the family. In 2005 he got married for the second time to Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall.
