Yale University is the third oldest educational institution in the United States, and easily one of the most prestigious, having been founded in 1701 as the Collegiate School, before being renamed to Yale in 1718 as an honor for the largest benefactor of the school, Elihu Yale, who was a British East India Company governor and a slave trader. Not the most auspicious start to a world renowned school, but in the 1700s, slave ownership was unfortunately a normal way of life. Yale has one of the highest Nobel Laureates among the Ivy League schools, and even beyond, at 62, in addition to 3 Turing Award winners and 31 billionaires. Five US Presidents also attended the school.
