9 Places to Visit in South America Before You Die

Although we could probably think of a list at triple the size of this one of the places to visit in South America before you die, let’s not get ahead of ourselves! There’s an abundance of information and advice out there, but if you were to see just one thing from each country, your list might look similar to this. We couldn’t even mention every country on the continent because there are just so many choices. So let’s this only be the very beginning for your South American adventures…

What is first on the list of things to do while you’re here? Do you want to explore some of the most beautiful islands featuring an array of diverse wildlife? Who wouldn’t? What about getting the iconic views at Rio you’ve always dreamed about? Of course, a few cocktails with some locals will be in store after. What about bizarre and weird sights? A bunch of salt could take care of that wish, just head to Bolivia. You’ll understand in a few minutes what I mean.

Two of the landmark waterfalls on any list make their appearance here in South America, including the largest one in the world. Into architecture and history? No problems there. Nearly everything on this list is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so that should tell you something.

9. Galapagos

This Ecuadorian oasis is THE place for wildlife fun. The Galapagos have some of the most diverse flora and fauna, some which are not found elsewhere. These 19 volcanic islands will amaze each and every visitor with its beauty and all the beasts that roam around.

8. Machu Picchu

We have many UNESCO World Heritage Sites on this list, and this one located in Peru is perhaps the most spectacular site in the country. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this impossible ancient city is perched 2,430 meters above sea level. The cultural relics, architecture, and, of course, views are breathtaking, to say the least.

7. Montevideo

This capital city of Uruguay has some great beaches to chill and relax on, but if that’s not enough, just head out for the night for a happening nightlife scene. Terrace restaurants for dinner, awesome urban parks to play with your kids, art galleries, music, and theaters are all what will captivate you while you’re in Montevideo.

6. Rio de Janeiro

What isn’t there to do in Rio? This Brazilian city is beaming with color and vibrancy. The people, the nightlife, the activities… It’s almost overwhelming. Of course, the most popular must-do’s are getting a great look at the city from Sugar Loaf Mountain, and to go up and visit Christ the Redeemer.

5. Iguazu Falls

Made of 275 waterfalls is one of the most well known waterfalls on earth, Iguazu Falls. This is one of the largest waterfalls in the world and certainly one of the most impressive. Straddling Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, you have a choice where to gaze at this beautiful natural wonder from.

4. Angel Falls

Behold, the tallest waterfall in the world at a staggering 979 meters tall. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Canaima National Park, in Venezuela, is where you can enter the lair of this mighty powerful waterfall.

3. Cartagena

This spot is said to be the most beautiful city in Colombia. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site which happens to have the most extensive fortification on the continent. The port city boasts adorable alfresco cafes, colonial architecture, and of course, sandy beautiful beaches for miles and miles.

2. Torres del Paine

Quite literally one of the most beautiful places on earth is Torre del Paine. It’s one of the most visited parks in Chile, and it’s easy to see why. The hiking is epic, and the pristine rivers are gorgeous, and lakes of icy shades of blue make for a spectacular scene.

1. Salar de Uyuni

Perhaps salt doesn’t sound too exciting, but the world’s largest salt flat? It’s just plain impressive! An estimate of 11 billions tons of salt go on for over 10,000 kilometers, it’s a spectacular salty sea of white. The nearby Bolivian villages even provide accommodation and items made of salt.
