Look, sports is one of the best things to exit in today’s world. Many of us have engaged in different types of sports whether just on a casual basis or competitively. Even though I never personally excelled at any sports, I still loved the thrill of it, and played many sports throughout my childhood and early twenties before office overtook everything, with the sports including table tennis, tennis, cricket, football, badminton and squash among others. I myself am a very competitive person, and I play to win, regardless of who my opponent is.
While I may not have the time, likes tens of millions across the world, to play sports myself, the next best thing is supporting a team. When you start supporting a team, you support them through thick and thin, for better or for worse. Yes, this is sort of a marriage, where you are tied to your team no matter what happens, and you will find divorce to be more common than a person changing a team he has genuinely supported. Their wins, especially over major rivals or for winning a championship, can lift our moods and bring a skip in our step, while ensuring that our day goes that much better. On the other hand, a big defeat, or in fact any defeat for that matter, can ruin our day, and we might be irrationally irritated or sad. But the fact of the matter is, supporting a team and watching their games can cause us to feel emotions that we may not otherwise get to experience. I am a supporter of Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League, and have been so for over a decade, even though I live thousands of miles away and have been unable to attend a match yet. Even then, when Spurs came back from 3-0 down to beat Ajax in the Champions League semi final in 2019 after scoring in the last minute of stoppage time, or when Sterling’s goal was disallowed, again in stoppage time in the quarterfinals of the same campaign, I cannot tell you the elation I felt or how I just kept jumping up and down because to win is one thing, to win in the face of such adversity allows us to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.
The same is true for the National Football League, or the NFL in the United States. In the United States, football is only next to religion in many areas, and for many atheists, well above religion. Even at a high school or college level, city rivalries are decided by their football teams and their head to head records, while many students can get major scholarships if they’re excellent at football. Due to this popularity, most of the teams in NFL are extremely rich and hence, they’ve earned hundreds of millions of dollars annually while providing their players with some of the biggest salaries in sports.
