Most dangerous roads: Do you know which are the most dangerous roads in the world?

Regardless of how experienced a driver you are, some roads tend to be harder to tackle than others. We have compiled a list of the 6 most dangerous roads in the world, in a style similar to our coverage of the most dangerous jobs.

After reading the countdown, you’ll be glad that the only thing you have to worry about each day on your way to work is a traffic jam.

Let’s take a look at the most dangerous roads:

The Patiopoulo-Perdikaki is a narrow stretch of dirt road with dangerous slopes on either side. The lack of guardrails and with nothing but gravel to get a good grip, this is one hazardous road, especially at night, when the visibility is much reduced.

No. 5: The Sichuan-Tibet Highway, China-Tibet

Linking Chengdu, China to Lhasa, Tibet, the Sichuan-Tibet Highway stretches across dozens of rivers, forests, and no less than 14 high mountains. Within a couple of hours, drivers can go from warm spring temperatures directly to deep-freezing winter. Although the road provides drivers with unique and exhilarating sceneries, the numerous avalanches and landslides that occur in the region make it one of the most hazardous roads in the world.

No. 4: The Siberian Road to Yakutsk, Russia

The Siberian road, or the Russian Federal Highway, links the Russian capital Moscow to the city of Yatusk. For approximately ten months of the year, during the Siberian winter, you will be driving through ice and heavy snow with much reduced visibility. But this is a walk in the park compared to how the road presents itself in the summertime. Because of the heavy rainfall and the fact that the road is completely unpaved, the Siberian road resembles more a mud slide rather than an adequate highway. And getting stuck in the mud is not even the worse that could happen. The area is frequented by the infamous Siberian mud pirates, who will not shy away from stealing your possession or even take your life.

No. 3: Ruta 5, Chile

Ruta 5, connecting Arica to Iquique, is the most dangerous road in Chile. Apart from the countless winding valleys you have to navigate, the bleak and colorless scenery give you a sense of isolation and create quite an eerie silence.

No. 2: Guoliang Tunnel Road, China

Located in China’s Hunan Province, the Guoliang Tunnel is a 1.2 km road carved within the Taihang mountains. Guoliang has been claiming lives even before it was opened in 1977, as several villagers were killed in accidents when the tunnel was still in construction.

No. 1: North Yungas Road, Bolivia

Dubbed “The Death Road”, the North Yungas links the Bolivian capital, La Paz, to Coroico, in the Amazon Region. Carved directly into the side of a mountain and with no guardrails to protect the vehicles, drivers courageous enough to take on this road have to be particularly confident of their skills. It is estimated that approximately 200 to 300 people are killed each year in car accidents somewhere along the 69 kilometers of road.
