Why Are Netskope (NTSK) Investors Waiting for Profitability Evidence?

Netskope Inc.’s (NASDAQ:NTSK) underperformance compared to the broader market during the last one year shows that investors are looking for evidence of a clearer path toward profitability before paying up for the stock. There are two sides of the story. For conservative investors, the company’s leverage and profitability metrics ask for patience until losses curtail. For growth investors on the other hand, an impressive topline growth is the actual catch.

The stock has delivered a 145% gain during the last 6 months, compared to a 33.88% for Insider Monkey Billionaire Index and 18.18% for S&P 500 ETF (SPY).

Lagging the Market. Opportunity or Warning Sign?

Netskope traded at $20.76 by October 9 closing. The stock has risen 18.3% in 2026, pushing the cloud security solutions provider’s market capitalization to $7.58 billion. The business is expanding rapidly, but the financials leave investors with plenty to weigh.

The recently announced Skylight Agent Action Control capability would position Netskope to become a leader within the AI agent governance space. It would enable security teams to control AI agent behavior by classifying their actions and controlling risky moves before execution. The latest tool caters to a pressing industry gap, as 91% of enterprises today lack capabilities to timely mitigate such risky attempts by agents. Moreover, 54% of the organizations using AI agents have witnessed a suspected or confirmed security breach during the past 12 months. Netskope widened its portfolio with some advanced features and additional offerings in recent times. So how is the company preparing to ride this AI security wave?

Liquidity Is Comforting, Leverage Is Not

For the second quarter of fiscal 2027, Netskope posted revenue of $220.5 million. This equates to a 29.2% jump compared to the same period last year. This impressive pace of growth has helped the company generate $802.6 million in trailing twelve-month sales. However, profitability continues to remain distant and concerns keep piling up. Trailing EBITDA clocked in at -$721 million, with with an approximately -94.7% trailing GAAP operating margin and -92% net margin. Investors will want to see operating leverage emerge as revenue scales.

The balance sheet figures show adequate liquidity for Netskope. But the leverage position is a bit alarming. As of the latest reported quarter, the company held $1.07 billion in cash compared to $732 million in total debt. The net cash position is comforting, as it gives enough cushion to explore growth avenues. However, its debt-to-equity ratio is where things take a turn, currently standing at 467%. Investors would also want to explore this semiconductor and cloud connectivity solutions provider, that is expanding its offerings with industry-first 10G passive optical network (PON) chipset.

Institutional Sentiment

Based on data tracked across 1,000+ hedge funds by Insider Monkey, number of smart-money managers with long-term exposure in the stock has been going up. A total of 35 hedge funds held positions by the end of Q2 2026, compared to 31 in Q1 2026.

ICONIQ Capital is the largest institutional stakeholder, as per Yahoo Finance database, holding 66.27 million shares as of June 30. Other notable institutional investors include BlackRock and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, holding 3.48% and 3.35% of outstanding shares respectively.

Verdict

Netskope’s topline multiples highlight a significant premium in its valuation, which is not something unusual for a security software business growing at around 30%. Valued at an EV-to-sales ratio of 9.03x and a price-to-sales multiple of 9.43x, investors are most likely paying up for continued topline momentum. However, any slowdown could put valuation under pressure. The stock trades at a 48.34x price-to-book ratio, which looks high. This is majorly due to a shrinking equity base amid Netskope’s persistent losses. Despite strong revenue growth, investors may want clearer evidence of improving margins and a sustainable path to profitability before paying this premium.
