SanDisk (SNDK) Is Now Worth More Than the Company That Spun It Off

Now worth more than Western Digital, the parent that spun it off, and has already repaid its separation debt in full. Flash re-rated harder and faster than drives did.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) closed at $1394.83 on October 15. The stock has returned 51.07% over the last six months, compared to a 15.4% return for the Insider Monkey Billionaire Index and 11.4% for the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust.

SanDisk makes flash memory, the kind of storage with no moving parts that sits inside phones, laptops and increasingly inside data centres. Until recently, it was a division of Western Digital rather than a company. Western Digital separated it out and listed it on its own. The market now values SanDisk at $265.98 billion against $170.78 billion for the parent that let it go.

SanDisk (SNDK) Is Now Worth More Than the Company That Spun It Off

Why the Market Changed Its Mind So Fast:

The business grew beyond anything the old structure was priced for. Revenue in the most recent quarter was 371.6% higher than a year earlier, and the shares are up 901.24% over twelve months.

Demand for flash memory in data centres is the cause. Storing the data that artificial intelligence systems train on and produce requires far more capacity than anybody had built, and flash is where the urgent part of that demand went.

What a Separation Does Not Change:

Flash memory is a commodity sold to buyers who compare on price. The margins look extraordinary today, with 78.47% of revenue surviving as operating profit. SanDisk has not yet reported through a full cycle on its own, so nobody has seen what that figure does in a bad year.

The question in front of every producer now is how much new capacity to build. Those decisions take years to arrive, and they arrive regardless of what demand looks like by then, which is how this industry has undone its own good years before.

The share price has already lived through a version of that. The stock sits well below its own high from earlier in the same twelve months, so the market has shown it can change its mind about this business very quickly indeed.

What the Multiple Admits:

The stock trades at 8.04 times what analysts expect next year, a fraction of the multiple it carries on the past twelve months. Analysts are therefore looking for earnings to rise again. The single-digit multiple is the market refusing to pay for that, which is a statement about whether these earnings survive a full cycle rather than a bargain hiding in plain sight.

A stock can be cheap against this year’s profit and expensive against a normal one, and this is both at once. Book value does not swing with the cycle the way profit does, and at 16.90 times book the shares look nothing like the bargain that next year’s profit makes them seem.

Conclusion:

Being worth more than the company that spun it off is a striking fact and a slightly misleading one. The parent kept the hard drive business, which is having a boom of its own, so this is not one half thriving while the other languishes. Flash simply re-rated harder and faster. The gap could close from either direction, and what matters now is how much new capacity the industry builds and how fast. A separation changed who owns this business. It did not change what kind of business it is.
