Astera Labs (ALAB) vs Tower Semiconductor (TSEM): Which is a Better Stock to Buy?

A 75.13% gross margin against 26.87% is the gap between licensing a design and running a plant, and no execution closes it. The foundry still generated more free cash flow, $300.61 million against $276.68 million, and trades at 36.99 times forward against 59.79.

Astera Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALAB) traded at around $382 on October 7, down 1.94% on the day, though still 72.91% higher over twelve months. Tower Semiconductor Ltd. (NASDAQ:TSEM) traded near $248 over the same session, up 248.36% across the year.

Both were moved this week by Marvell’s guidance rather than their own, and the similarity ends at the gross margin line.

Astera Labs (ALAB) vs Tower Semiconductor (TSEM): Which is a Better Stock to Buy?

One Sells Designs, and One Sells Capacity:

The gross margins separate these two more completely than any other figure. Astera Labs runs a 75.13% gross margin against 26.87% at Tower Semiconductor. That is the difference between licensing a design and operating a fabrication plant, and no amount of execution closes it.

At the operating line, the gap almost disappears, at 22.74% against 19.63%. So Tower Semiconductor converts a much thinner gross margin into nearly the same operating result, which is an argument about cost control. Earnings growth points the same way, at 198.90% against 95.00%, though both figures are measured from small bases.

Growth favors the designer. Astera Labs grew revenue 104.50% in the most recent quarter against 23.70% at Tower Semiconductor. Billionaire investors hold ten semiconductor stocks. The one ranked first has returned 24% since June.

The Cash Statement Reverses the Ranking:

Put the free cash flow beside the revenue, and the order changes. Tower Semiconductor generated $300.61 million of free cash flow on $1.71 billion of revenue. Astera Labs generated $276.68 million on $1.2 billion.

The foundry with the worse margin produced more cash, which is what owning the plant eventually delivers. Capital spending explains the shape of it. Tower Semiconductor spent $565.29 million against $59.04 million at Astera Labs. Owning a plant means that spending is permanent, while a fabless designer can leave it to somebody else.

Net margins follow the same order, at 30.74% for Astera Labs against 16.94% at Tower Semiconductor. A current ratio of 10.05 at Astera Labs against 4.91 at Tower Semiconductor means neither company depends on the credit markets to operate. Return on equity lands at 25.83% against 9.98%, and that is the clearest win for the fabless model. In January, we ranked ten stocks for high returns. The one we put first has returned almost 30% since.

The Valuation Case:

Astera Labs traded at around $382 on October 7 and is worth $66.31 billion, against $28.06 billion. Sustainability for both depends on accelerator demand, since neither company sets the pace of the buildout.

On price, Tower Semiconductor is cheaper on both earnings measures, at 102.16 times trailing against 192.09 and 36.99 times forward against 59.79. Price-to-book separates them further, at 38.43 for Astera Labs against 9.09. Both balance sheets are clean. Debt-to-equity is 2.57% at Astera Labs and 4.61% at Tower Semiconductor.

Conclusion:

Astera Labs is the better business and Tower Semiconductor is the cheaper stock. A 75.13% gross margin, 104.50% revenue growth, and a 25.83% return on equity are not close comparisons. However, Tower Semiconductor produced $300.61 million of free cash flow against $276.68 million while earning less than half the gross margin, and it trades at 36.99 times forward earnings against 59.79. The number to watch is operating margin, because 22.74% against 19.63% is how little the gross margin advantage is actually worth.
