Top 5 Selling Smartphones of 2013

The top-selling smartphones of 2013 are popular. Really popular. According to the International Business Times, in 2013 smartphones accounted for 55% of all mobile device sales around the world. With such an important influence on consumers, it is understandable that smartphone manufacturers are all competing to get the biggest slice of the pie.

Following, we would like to present you with a list we have compiled of the top-selling smartphones of 2013, according to the number of units sold and the market share occupied by each company. The figures used in the making of the countdown were released by Gartner in November 2013.

While in the US, Apple has been generating the most sales throughout the year, largely due to the release of their latest products, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5, worldwide, Samsung is the overall leader with a 32.1% share of the market. Apple is also leader on the Japanese market and it expected that the company will also increase its influence in China. Currently, the top two positions on the Chinese market are occupied by Samsung and Lenovo, but Apple has steadily increased its influence over the last few months.

When we look at quarterly performances, however, Apple has been the main player on the global market in the last four months. The iPhone 5S has been the top selling smartphone in September, October, November, and December. The previous version of the phone, the iPhone 5 ranked second, while their arch rival, the Galaxy S4 came in third in the last quarter of 2013. This might be explained by the fact that the Galaxy S4 had already been on sale for 9 months, a considerable length of time for any smartphone.

The iPhone 5C also ranks amongst the top selling smartphones this year, and it might have scored an ever higher placing had Apple not started shipping the phone late in the quarter. The Note III, Galaxy S III, Galaxy S 4 mini, and the Galaxy S III mini are among the best sold models from Samsung. Nokia, while not featured on our countdown in term of overall sales, did manage to produce a top selling model this year, the Asha 501.
