What do you think is the most expensive city in the world? New York? Paris? London? Well, it is true that it can be quite costly to live in any of these cities, but neither of the three are anywhere near the undisputed leader, Hong Kong.

That’s right, you’ve read correctly, Hong Kong, China is 2013’s most expensive city, with an average price per square foot of $11,000. And it is not the only Asian metropolis to make our top ten; in fact, 5 out of the 10 cities in the countdown are from Asia. Whatever their secret formula is, it is surely working, as this continent has enjoyed a constant and exponential economic and industrial growth, which is more than evident from our countdown as well.

New York City did make our top ten, landing in the sixth position, with an average price per square foot of $4,100, less than half that of Hong Kong. So if you thought buying real estate in Manhattan was pricy, think again. The European capitals, London and Paris, have also made the list, both surpassing New York, but are still a long way away from the leader.
