Research by the Bank for International Settlements said that equity markets tend to already price in earnings expectations well before official results are announced. Much of the available information is already reflected in companies’ share prices ahead of earnings announcement, with results exceeding expectations the only ones generating meaningful positive market reactions.
As a result, EPS beats are relatively uncommon.
This is further supported by research from the National Investor Relations Institute which indicates that many listed companies release earnings guidance or other forward-looking information before reporting results to help narrow the gap between analyst forecasts and actual earnings, and thus, reduce the likelihood of large earnings surprises.
In the US markets alone, nearly 400 companies released their second-quarter 2026 results, yet only 52 delivered exceptional earnings announcements, making them worthy of closer investor attention.
