We have researched a lot on this no call no show topic, and we’ve found out some very interesting things. First of all, many people agree that this just doesn’t work. There are no real excuses for missing work and not calling that will get you out of trouble. On many forums that we checked, we also got opinions from many bosses who said there is no good excuse for not calling, and that they would immediately fire that employee. So, before going all crazy about our suggestions, you should definitely try to avoid a circumstance in which you will need them.

Yes, calling in sick, calling that day, getting off in advance, these are all a completely different category, but when it comes to a no call no show, many say that is just like quitting. And depending on your boss, this may well be the case.  And you can’t really say that your boss is a jerk, because when you think about it, they are right. With all the technology nowadays, is it possible to find a good excuse for missing work and not at least sending a message to your office?

Well, we browsed a lot, and found only a few options. If they are good it is up to your boss to decide, and for you to gamble with. We are sure there are bosses who will pretend that this is OK, if this has happened only one time, but if your excuse works out, don’t be greedy, don’t try it a second time.

Some of the many forums and sites that have helped us with suggestions are Yahoo answersQuora, and IGN. Because of all that was said above, we’ve really had a hard time finding out some good suggestions. So, for our list, we had to even make up one completely crazy scenario, that can only work if you are a good liar, and have a boss that is a bit promiscuous, to put it that way. We have also picked the best/ultimate no call no show excuse that is the only one for which no boss can get mad, but unfortunately, you can’t really use it. Pretty soon you will understand what are we talking about, unless you have already guessed this one folks. Did you?  No, it is not – “Sorry I wasn’t able to call yesterday, I decided that I wanted to lose my job”, although that one is also quite understandable.

Please forgive us for the puns, but we feel like this topic requires them. I mean, are there any serious, responsible people googling “good excuses not showing up”? We think not.

Ok, we will give you the benefit of the doubt, maybe some of you really have had serious problems, and just couldn’t pick up the phone and do it, but out of who knows how many people who are googling for these suggestions, we are sure that only a handful has some really good excuse for it. And to that handful we dedicate our number one one the list of good excuses for missing work and not calling. So, start reading to check it out.

8. You DID call and leave a message – they didn’t get it?

OK, so we start with a “simple lie ” about there ever being a problem such as you not calling to explain why didn’t you show up. Is this a good option for you? Well, it all depends on your boss, and a colleague who would want to back you up, by saying he/she forgot to pass the message on. But this can’t work if your boss had already asked the entire office where you were and have you called, and they’ve already blown your “cover”.  We are sure there are places where this could work, but not that many. And if you think you have a boss who will let you go with this…you may want to consider keeping such a job, because nice, understandable bosses are not everywhere around.

7. Mental health/depression

This is definitely one of the most discussed no call no show excuses on the web. And one of the very good excuses for missing work and not calling, as well. People also often search for “no call no show depression” and from what we found out that is because this is a common problem happening in the work places all around the world.  To be more specific – there are many people who really suffer from depression, and they don’t use this as an excuse, it is an actual excuse for them. Imagine being so depressed, sad, having no will for living…if you never ever even for a second experienced this, then you have no idea how they feel, and how serious this is. Enough about this being a real problem, how about using it as an excuse? Well, if you are usually a cheerful person, or just a normal person, chances are this won’t work. The boss may even ask for a note from a psychiatrist or something. Nevertheless, if your boss is one of those caring people, trying not to offend anyone, maybe you will get with it this one time.

6. That you died

Yes. Comparing to the other on our list of  good excuses for missing work and not calling, this is the ultimate one we were talking about in the intro part. If you’ve died, you really couldn’t call for not showing up at work, and you really couldn’t show up at work as well. Your boss shouldn’t be mad. Now, the fact that you can’t benefit from this one…well, is just a detail.

5. So sick, couldn’t talk

So what did you have to feel that sick? Cyanide poisoning?

Yes.

How do you look so good the next day then?

Yes, this could actually work. I mean not cyanide poisoning, but coming up with some health issues that were so bad that you couldn’t even talk, you basically passed out in the bed and slept until it was too late to call. Yes, it would be better to get the doctor’s note for this as well.

4. Sleeping pill

This is actually a very interesting excuse on our list of 8 good excuses for missing work and not calling. You have trouble sleeping at night. You took too many pills, you slept through the alarm. Woke up so late, felt embarrassed to call.

Sounds simple. And a bit stupid.

So, it should be believable.

3. Wife caught cheating

We are at the number three on our list of  good excuses for missing work and not calling, and this is where our imagination blossomed. This is purely our original idea. It will work if your boss is that kind of guy. Special kind of guy.

So, your wife/girlfriend caught you cheating the night before, and you guys stayed up all night and the next day fighting. You couldn’t leave the argument being guilty and all, and still wanting to persuade her that will never happen again, and that you love her…not to take your kids away…and the story can just go on, and on.

But don’t dramatize it too much. If your boss had an experience like this, he will know something is too fishy.

Good liar tips – don’t get into too many details. Don’t overact, and exaggerate, and you should be fine. At least we think so.

2. Family emergency/Personal problems

Our number two on the list of good excuses for missing work and not calling, can also work for some of the bosses. There are those that respect the privacy, and just telling that you had personal problems and nothing more can really sound serious enough so that your boss will give you a second chance.

But, maybe you should think about keeping this one; just in case one day you really have some personal problems you wish not to discuss.

1. Not making one

Yup, we are being bold. Once again. Just like in our previous lists on excuses in advance. Again a first place, because in this case again, many people feel like being honest is the best way to go. While that can be true in some cases, in others where you just didn’t show up because you were tired, didn’t want to show up, wanted to spend the entire day with your lover… this is not something we recommend. Yet again, it all comes down to – what is your boss like, how are you as an employee, is this the first time you’ve done something like this, and so on. Knowing your boss better than we do, maybe you can help us with your suggestions to make this list of good excuses for missing work and not calling complete?

We sincerely hope that you enjoyed this article, and that you haven’t lost your job!
