5. China

Total Organic Vineyard Area: 13,000 ha

The domestic wine production has expanded immensely in China and the country has the second-largest vineyard area in the world. There has recently been a shift to making low-intervention, organic, biodynamic, and natural wines among China’s top tier wineries in Ningxia and Xinjiang. 

The Middle Kingdom has become a world leader in consuming wines, especially wines imported from traditional wine producing countries. The increasing health concerns have also prompted Chinese consumers toward favoring organic products.

4. United States of America

Total Organic Vineyard Area: 27,444 ha

The United States was the world leader in the wine market last year in terms of revenue, with $52.7 billion. Although wine is produced in every state of the country, the majority of production takes place in the sun-soaked state of California, responsible for around 85% of the total U.S. wine production volume. In total, there are over 11,000 wineries spread across the nation, each crafting its own unique flavors in limited quantities.

Organic wine is still a niche market in America, comprising only 1% of wine sold by volume and 2% of wine by value, according to Nielsen, but the data shows sustained and rapid growth for both domestic and foreign organically grown wines.

3. Italy

Total Organic Vineyard Area: 103,576 ha

The Italians have put particular care and dedication into wine, which means that Italian wine is still considered one of the excellences of the Bel Paese with full rights. Italy is responsible for 19.3% of the global wine production, boasting an industry revenue of around $34 billion. 

Organic vine areas continue to grow in Italy, but the volume of organic wine still has a marginal overall weight, covering 6% of national production.

2. France

Total Organic Vineyard Area: 136,431 ha

France is a country synonymous with fine wine and as any map of French wine regions will show, there are vineyards scattered throughout the country, responsible for producing 7-8 billion bottles of wine a year.

France is the European leader for organically farmed vineyards, with around 18% of the country’s total vine area farmed organically. The industry boasted a revenue of around $1.3 billion in 2021, up more than 9% in 2020.

1. Spain

Total Organic Vineyard Area: 142,177 ha

Spain sits among the most famous wine producing countries, with over 1 million hectares under wine across 139 regions. The Spanish wine market has been flourishing in recent years, driven by factors such as increased consumption, growing tourism, and a focus on quality production.

Spain has the highest number of organic vineyards in Europe and it is estimated that organic viticulture produced over 441,000 tonnes in 2020, positioning Spain as a world leader in terms of organic wine production. 

Organic cava, in particular, is experiencing great demand, with new regulations stipulating that all top wines in the categories Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Paraje Calificado Cavas must be produced 100% organically by 2025.
