15 States with the Ugliest Women in America

Appearances do matter in the world we live in so we thought it would be fun to rank states with the ugliest women in America. If your state is among the ugliest states in America, it doesn’t mean that you, your family members or friends are ugly.

Everyone enjoys a sight of something beautiful. It is an inherent part of our very nature. We have to satisfy our aesthetic needs much like we have to satisfy physiological needs. That is why we listen to Beethoven’s „Moonlight Sonata“, why we enjoy the sight of aurora borealis. It is our insatiable need for beauty that makes us forget about social behavior code while staring at the alluring face of a woman passing by on the street. The chances that you will be captivated by women’s beauty are higher if you decide to visit one of the countries with the most beautiful women in the world. It’s a different story if you happen to be in one of the countries with the ugliest women in the world.

So, we tend to claim that beauty is a matter of subjective perception, but studies have shown that many of us find the same things beautiful. Ancient Greeks believed that beauty is embodied in Golden Ratio, 1:1.618. A study on attractiveness conducted in 2003 has found a new „golden ratio“ – 0.36, which is one element of key facial dimensions based on true Golden Ratio. Interestingly enough, symmetry in the face does not imply beauty. The fact is that a perfectly symmetrical face would appear unnatural to us. The shape of the face, skin tone, age, distinctiveness of facial features and emotions the face portrays all together play the role in our perception of someone’s beauty.

The media nowadays plays a great role in our perception of human beauty. Western standard of beauty is imposed on us as an ideal. Women who come from states on our list do not seem to be bothered attaining this ideal. Other parts of the world have embraced different standards which we perceive as being strange and certainly not as embodying beauty. Most of us would frown upon the sight of ‘lotus’ feet – a body modification practiced in China whereby girl’s feet were bound tightly in order to prevent them from growing. The feet modified in this way were regarded as sexually appealing. I imagine we would be distressed upon seeing stretched lips of a Mursi woman. Apparently, in some parts of Ethiopia stretching a woman’s lips with lip disks is a beauty standard that helps a girl evolve into a woman. Most likely, these women would have the same reaction upon seeing the procedure of getting botox injected into lips or the corrective procedures such as buttock augmentation.

When creating the list of states with the ugliest women in America we referred to the ranking of state representatives on the most famous beauty pageant in the USA since 1952, Miss USA for Miss World. We considered how many state representatives were awarded titles Miss USA or Miss America, whether they ended up being 2nd, 3rd or 4th runner, and how many of them entered top 10 or top 15. Given that body shape and size also play a role in the perception of beauty, we have taken into account the results of a study  which analyzed the obesity rate for women in each state. We considered the opinions on the beauty of American women which discussion board users expressed on tiger droppings and letsrun.com. So, dear reader, don’t take this list of states with the ugliest women in America too seriously. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?

15. New Jersey

Two contestants from New Jersey were awarded the title Miss America, but none ever won the title Miss USA, what places New Jersey on the last spot of our list of ugliest states in America.

14. Indiana

Indiana’s obesity rate for women is 60.4 and no representative ever won the title Miss USA. There is a popular joke referencing the supposed lack of beauty of Indiana women. Q: Why don’t girls play hide and seek in Indiana? A: No one would look for them.

13. Oregon

Apart from writing about the lack of beauty of women from Oregon, discussion board users were also keen on referencing the supposed promiscuity.

12. Wisconsin

A thread posted on letsrun.com references the ugliness of Wisconsin residents. One of the users commented that bad teeth and excess weight are common in any rural area, not just Wisconsin. The user goes on saying that girls start gaining weight after high school and continue doing so until they are 60.

11. Colorado

Colorado representative never won the title Miss USA but had one 1st runner, two 2nd runners, and two 3rd runners. The obesity rate for women is 48.2.

10. West Virginia

The only notable success of West Virginia on the beauty pageant we focus on was having one 2nd runner. One of the discussion board users writes:”I just don’t think you’ve seen ugly ’til you’ve been to West Virginia.”

9. Nebraska

While Nebraska had one representative winning the title of Miss America, no representative ever made notable success on Miss USA pageant. The obesity rate for women is 60.2, which means more than 50 % of women living in Nebraska are obese. That is some harsh statistics.

8. Delaware

No Delaware representative ever won the title Miss USA or Miss America, nor was a forerunner. The obesity rate for women is slightly higher than that of Alaska which is why Delaware is ranking as 8th on our list of states with the ugliest women in America.

7. North Dakota

No representative of North Dakota ever won the title of Miss USA. Commentators on discussion board did not hold back from expressing their views. One said: “Never met a Dakotan personally, but I’ve heard legends of their ugliness.”

6. South Dakota

Dakotas appear to be twins in terms of how outsiders perceive women living there. It is not just the looks, but also their accent people don’t particularly like. It is ranked #6 ugliest state in America.

5. Wyoming

One 1st runner, one 3rd runner and no major titles awarded to Wyoming representatives on beauty pageants in the USA. There is a popular joke referencing the beauty of Wyoming women. Q: What do you call a good looking girl on the University of Wyoming campus? A: A visitor. Ouch!

4. Maine

The obesity rate for women in Maine is 61.5 placing it among top 5 states with the highest obesity rate. No major title holders, only one 2nd runner and one 4th runner on Miss USA contest.

3. New Hampshire

While the obesity rate for New Hampshire is lower than rates for some other states, lack of success on beauty pageants puts this state on the 3rd place of our list.

2. Montana

Over 50% of women in Montana are obese. Also, this state never had a successful representative on Miss USA pageant. Two women managed to enter the Top 10 circle, two women entered the Top 15, and that is the best result this state ever had on the major beauty pageants in the USA. That’s why it is ranked #2 ugliest state in America.

1. Alaska

The first place on our list of states with the ugliest women in America belongs to Alaska. Alaska’s obesity rate for women is 61.3 and the only two successful representatives on Miss USA pageant are those who entered the Top 10 and the Top 15.
