12. Hickory Dickory Dock

The song “Hickory Dickory Dock” is a very popular English nursery rhyme. Today, there is a modern version which goes:

“Hickory, dickory, dock

The mouse ran up the clock,

The clock struck one,

The mouse ran down,

Hickory, dickory, dock.”

The earliest recorded version of this song was in London about 1744 and many other versions followed. The song is based on the astronomical clock at Exeter Cathedral where the clock has a small hole in the door for the resident cat to hunt the mice.
