Because India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it faces historical international restrictions on importing raw nuclear materials for military use. Consequently, domestic mining is prioritized to fuel indigenous heavy-water reactors, while the government pursues structural reforms, such as opening non-mining nuclear sectors to private investment, to ease the supply strain on the power grid.
