10 Best Emergency Medicine Residency Programs in 2018

If you’re hooked on adrenaline, and yet able to keep your cool in the most stressful situations, then these 10 best emergency medicine residency programs in 2018 are for you.

Emergency physicians definitely get all the excitement. While all other doctors have some time to analyze the situation carefully and decide on the treatment, that luxury is unimaginable in the ER. Of course, not every day are you going to have to face with a dying patient or a life-threatening situation, but it can be said you’re the first on the front line. And your battlefield can get very, very bloody. On the other hand, you can have days when you just need to identify a small trauma and send the patient off to your colleagues. One thing is for sure, you never know what your day will be like.

For all of you who are keen on such excitement, let us tell you the basic requirements. Study informs us that you need the following: a medical degree, a medical residency and successful completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). Even before applying for taking the MCAT, you are required to have completed extracurricular activities, such as volunteering at a hospital or clinic. The education process after completing basic medical studies implies a 3- or 4- year long residency training program. What is especially tricky about being an emergency physician is the fact that you have to be able to identify and interpret states from all areas of medicine. Whoever comes through the door, and whatever problem he has, you have to deal with it as quickly as possible before sending him to the specialist.

In case that sounds rather overwhelming, there are plenty of other fields of medicine you can specialize in. We’ve already covered top anesthesiology residency programs in Top 12 Anesthesiology Residency Programs in 2018 should you wish to become a surgeon’s “silent partner”. Or perhaps a surgeon, in which case you can read our article on top 12 surgery residency programs in 2018 for general surgery residency rankings. There you can also find information about top psychiatry residency programs. But there’s nothing like picking one’s brain, is it? For neurology and best neurosurgery residency programs, Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins are usually quoted as the most suitable hospitals for these fields.

However, similarly to other medical professions, you can count on great salary. The median annual salary was $206,114. What is more, the projected job growth is 14% (for all physicians and surgeons), and it’s very comforting to know a job will be waiting for you once you finish your studies.

Let’s now explain how we came up with criteria for our residency program rankings. The search for top emergency medicine residency programs started with Start Class. They ranked medical schools according to their combination of MCAT scores, GPA and tuition fee. To really raise the bar, we wanted to see how top medical schools were ranked when it came to Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). This is ranking for 2017, but we believe it is fair enough since universities have yet to get their points in 2018. Harvard University is number one, but it’s not really in the top 20 when it comes to emergency medicine. We decided the combination of both is the perfect indicator. For instance, while one university is in the first place according to Start-Class, it got a lower position due to its rank on the list of best universities in the world. A question arises why it matters so much how it is ranked on the global list. The reasons are very practical. Basically, if you can boast about how your institution is in the top 10 in the whole world, certainly the success will affect your cooperation with other institutions and enable you to obtain significant benefits within the state and abroad.

Let’s take a look what the list of most successful universities and best emergency medicine schools looks like. We’ll tell you their location, tuition fees, and some other interesting facts (the number of students, how it compares to the others, etc.).
