Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) is benefiting from the infrastructure needed to power data centers and modernize electricity networks. Second-quarter total electrical backlog increased 43% year over year, while companywide organic sales grew 14%. The investment question is whether factories can turn those orders into lasting profit without consuming too much capital.
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) trades at approximately 28x forward earnings versus 45x trailing earnings. Acquisition-related expenses, intangible amortization, and restructuring depress reported earnings: second-quarter EPS was $2.11, compared with adjusted EPS of $3.15 after those exclusions. Expected earnings growth supports the lower forward multiple, but accounting adjustments also matter. Management guides to roughly flat reported EPS in 2026 but 12% adjusted EPS growth. Acquisition costs still matter to shareholder returns.
For Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN), the valuation looks demanding against 21x for electrical and utility-equipment supplier Hubbell Incorporated (NYSE:HUBB). Analysts expect approximately 20% adjusted EPS growth in 2027 versus 12% for that peer. Faster growth supports a premium, but the company must deliver a meaningful improvement in profitability to earn it.

Turning Customer Orders Into Profitable Deliveries
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) has evidence that demand extends beyond acquired revenue. Both electrical segments grew sales 18% organically. Electrical Americas’ rolling twelve-month order growth reached 41%, and the combined electrical book-to-bill ratio was 1.2, meaning orders exceeded sales over that period. Orders exceeding shipments support further deliveries, but profit depends on the price and cost of fulfilling them.
The manufacturing challenge is familiar: a large order book still needs factories that can deliver. Electrical Americas’ operating profit increased 10%, trailing organic sales growth. Its 27.5% operating margin improved 190 basis points sequentially but remained below 29.5% a year earlier, primarily because pricing lagged costs.
Management expects pricing actions to bring that relationship roughly into balance in the second half. Increasing output, reducing overtime and improving operator productivity should also help. For Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN), those are concrete sources of potential margin recovery, supported by the sequential improvement already achieved.
Delivery timing remains important. The International Energy Agency identifies grid capacity as a bottleneck holding back new electricity demand. That creates equipment opportunities while also risking customer-project delays. Securing power quickly enough to start operations can matter as much as ordering the equipment. Postponements or cancellations could leave materials and labor committed before revenue arrives.
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) supplies the infrastructure behind the opportunity explored in Insider Monkey’s 10 Best AI Energy Stocks to Buy in 2026. Reliable equipment and engineering support can protect customer relationships when downtime is expensive. That advantage earns its value through profitable shipments and collections.
Capacity Must Still Pay When Demand Normalizes
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) is investing more than $1 billion across roughly two dozen Electrical Americas capacity projects. Additional production can spread factory overhead across more deliveries, but new equipment also brings depreciation and staffing costs. The question is whether new factories stay busy enough to earn their cost when today’s backlog clears.
Cash generation provides some support. Second-quarter free cash flow, operating cash flow less capital expenditure, reached $874 million, up 22%. Lower working-capital cash absorption contributed $564 million, exceeding the $478 million increase in first-half operating cash flow. Working capital still consumed $833 million. Sustainable returns require recurring earnings and disciplined inventory and collections, alongside approximately $1.15 billion of planned annual capital expenditure.
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) also paid $9.55 billion for a thermal-management acquisition in March. Acquisition spending was supported by substantial borrowing; second-quarter net interest expense rose to $201 million from $71 million a year earlier. More cooling content per customer can expand revenue, but the acquired profit must cover integration, reinvestment, and financing costs before shareholders benefit.
The forward multiple has fallen from approximately 32x in June 2026, yet remains above 24x in December 2025. Stronger growth guidance and an expanding electrical portfolio support some premium over the earlier valuation. Higher financing costs and unfinished margin recovery argue against treating the June multiple as a fair-value target.
Vertiv Holdings Co (NYSE:VRT) also trades near 28x forward earnings, with analysts expecting approximately 36% adjusted EPS growth in 2027. Its greater concentration in data-center infrastructure brings more direct exposure to that investment cycle. The broader industrial and aerospace exposure offers diversification, but the similar multiple leaves slower expected earnings growth without a clear valuation discount.
Conclusion
Eaton Corporation plc (NYSE:ETN) has credible earnings potential, but its forward valuation is demanding. Management’s 11%–13% organic growth and 24.1%–24.5% segment-margin guidance require pricing and factory productivity to keep improving. Achieving those margins while strengthening cash generation after investment and interest would make the valuation more reasonable. Persistent margin pressure or delivery delays would weaken it despite a growing backlog.
