Ciena (CIEN): Is the AI-Optical Boom Enough to Carry It Into the S&P 500?

One of the best-qualified names on the list, already profitable and riding the AI data-center wave. Its case rests less on eligibility and more on whether the boom keeps running.

Ciena Corporation (NYSE:CIEN) makes the optical networking gear that carries data across the internet’s backbone and between data centers, the physical plumbing behind the AI boom. With a market cap of roughly $48.5 billion, it is one of the best-qualified names on our list of 9 New Contenders for the S&P 500 Index. Unlike most contenders for the S&P 500, it is cleanly profitable under standard accounting rules, which means it already has a real trailing price-to-earnings ratio. At 77, the figure is high because reported earnings are only now ramping. On next year’s expected profit, the forward multiple falls to roughly 40 times, and the gap between the two is the whole valuation debate.

Ciena (CIEN): Is the AI-Optical Boom Enough to Carry It Into the S&P 500?

Bull Case

The bull thesis puts forth the demand surge. AI data centers and telecom carriers are rushing to buy optical capacity. And this is reflected in the company’s results. The record third-quarter revenue rose about 37%, and the stock has climbed roughly 98% over the past year. At a recent investor forum, management laid out a path toward 30% growth and much higher profit by fiscal 2029. If that bridge holds, the forward multiple near 40 times looks reasonable against the growth rate, and the trailing figure simply reflects earnings that are still in the early phase of catching up to revenue.

Bear Case

The bears find cyclicality a problem. Ciena sells hardware, and hardware demand moves in waves rather than a straight line. Component constraints can cap how much it ships in a given quarter. If there were a pause in the current data-center spending wave, it would hit revenue quickly. After a run this steep, there is little room for a demand air pocket, and the high trailing multiple assumes the profit ramp continues without a stumble. A single disappointing quarter on new orders could unwind a significant portion of the past year’s gains, since so much optimism is already priced in at these levels.

In the past six months, the stock slid by -32 while the Insider Monkey Billionaire Index gained 11.6% over the same period.

Bottom line

The bottom line is that Ciena ticks every inclusion box. It is profitable and large. Its shares trade heavily. It does not need a profitability breakthrough the way the software names on our list do. Therefore, its case rests less on eligibility but more on whether the AI-optical boom keeps running long enough to justify the price. For the index committee, it is a clean, ready candidate. For an investor, the harder question is whether to buy a cyclical hardware supplier near the top of a sharp run, with its trailing multiple still remaining high.

Market Sentiment

On positioning, Insider Monkey’s database shows ownership in Ciena Corporation climbed to 81 hedge funds at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up from 73 the quarter before. The increase in number indicates a vote of confidence among the institutional investors in the market.
