Baidu (BIDU) Expands Its AI Business, but the Core Revenue Recovery Remains Uncertain

Baidu's AI cloud revenue grew 50%, but overall revenue fell for another straight quarter, raising a key question for investors: can the newer business outgrow the shrinking one fast enough to matter?

Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) is expanding autonomous driving and AI services while its traditional business stays under pressure. That raises a hard valuation question: can the new activities grow fast enough, and profitably enough, to replace what the established business is losing?

At roughly 19 times forward earnings, investors pay for that transition to work. They are not buying a proven robotaxi profit stream. Compare Baidu’s Apollo Go investment with the 10 Best Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy Now.

Autonomous ride-hailing can bring repeat revenue from an existing fleet. But operators must cover vehicles, maintenance, charging, customer support, and the cost of entering new markets.

Baidu’s August investor presentation described Apollo Go’s global footprint across 28 cities. That shows geographic reach. It does not prove that every location runs a mature, profitable operation.

Baidu (BIDU) Trades at 19 Times Forward Earnings. Can Robotaxis Offset a Weaker Core Business?

AI Growth Has Not Yet Restored Overall Sales Growth

Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) reported second-quarter revenue of RMB31.3 billion, down 4% from a year earlier.

AI Cloud Infrastructure revenue rose 50% to RMB7.3 billion. That gives clear evidence of demand for the newer business, beyond announcements about future AI applications.

Apollo Go’s expansion needs to become a profitable business. Compare with other developers pursuing commercial deployment in our autonomous driving stocks list.

But the company said online marketing stayed under pressure. That contrast explains why fast growth in one activity has not yet restored total revenue growth.

The transition is still gaining scale. Baidu reported RMB12.5 billion in core AI-powered activities, about half of General Business revenue. The newer businesses now play a more meaningful role, though growth must still improve overall economics.

Positive Cash Flow Provides Time to Adapt

Operating cash flow reached RMB3.4 billion in Q2. That gives Baidu some capacity to finance development while its revenue mix changes.

Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU) also reported positive quarterly operating income of RMB3.0 billion, an operating margin of about 10%. That margin shows the share of revenue left as profit after operating expenses.

Weaker revenue does not mean Baidu stopped producing operating earnings or cash. But its cloud business carries infrastructure costs, and robotaxi expansion needs continued investment.

Investors have alternatives to Baidu’s transition story. Our self-driving car stocks list compares other companies pursuing the same transport opportunity.

The test goes beyond launching more services. Those services must improve group profit and cash generation enough to offset pressure on the older advertising business.

The Forward Valuation Already Gives the Transition Credit

Baidu’s trailing EPS is negative, so a real reported trailing P/E does not exist. Investors should not use a large positive trailing multiple from a conflicting table to imply a precise earnings rebound.

Baidu’s forward P/E is 19.19, so investors pay about $19 for each $1 of annual earnings analysts expect. That shows a forecast profit base. It does not guarantee the transition will deliver it.

Growing AI revenue, better cost control, and more productive use of the robotaxi fleet could support future earnings. The latest revenue decline is the evidence against assuming an easy recovery.

The forward P/E sits above the 9.20 it showed on June 30, 2025, and close to the 19.76 on December 31, 2025. Baidu has become more expensive than the older comparison, despite pressure on overall sales.

Baidu also needs AI demand to improve overall earnings. Compare other businesses pursuing that growth in our AI stocks to buy and hold.

The communications-sector median is 12.75 times forward adjusted earnings, and Baidu’s multiple is higher. Its AI and autonomous-driving opportunities offer possible reasons for that premium, but they must still improve company-wide results.

Market Sentiment

At the end of Q2 2026, 49 hedge funds held Baidu, down from 50 in Q1. Their combined stakes totaled $1.27 billion, up from $819 million. The higher value does not prove net buying.

Does the Transition Justify Buying?

Baidu, Inc. (NASDAQ:BIDU)’s AI growth and positive cash generation back up holding the shares, but they do not yet make a compelling case for a new purchase at this valuation. The stock already gives real credit to the newer businesses while overall revenue shrinks. A return to sustained group growth and clearer commercial returns from Apollo Go would strengthen the case. Expansion that fails to improve operating profit or cash generation would leave the premium hard to defend.
