Latest data from financial data firm FactSet said an earnings per share growth of 15 percent or more is already considered an unusually strong result rather than a normal earnings outcome.
Through July 24, 86 percent of the S&P 500 companies that reported second-quarter earnings exceeded analyst expectations, well above the 10-year average of 76 percent. Yet, despite the high percentage, the aggregate earnings surprise—excluding an unusually large individual outlier—was only 12.6 percent, indicating that while earnings beats have been widespread, the magnitude of those beats was generally modest.
The same pattern is evident in this quarter’s earnings season. On August 5 alone, more than 550 companies reported second-quarter earnings results, yet only 76 of them delivered EPS surprises.
