Twitter Inc (TWTR) Launches First Replayable Live-Streaming Mobile App

There might not be a more appropriate time for Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) to launch Periscope, its live-streaming app which is loaded with some wonderful features. We are living in a mobile era and fast internet speeds have enabled us to make use of the full capabilities of live streaming apps. Meerkat is one such live streaming app which allows users to stream live videos to all their Twitter Inc followers right from their smart phones.

Twitter, Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)

Launched very recently, Meerkat has been growing at an unprecedented rate of 30% a day for the last eleven days. It is currently featured on iTunes Store as the best new app. CNBC talked to the CEO of Periscope, Kayvon Beykpour, about the functions in Periscope which according to him will make it the most wanted live-streaming app.

“When you are watching Periscope, you are watching a video that’s about two seconds old. Now, that’s a lot more recent than even watching television, not to mention other consumer broadcasting tools like Meerkat. We think that’s important because its lets you as a viewer be super-engaged in the broadcast,” Beykpour said.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) had acquired Periscope before its launch but it is allowing Periscope to keep working independantly. Periscope is Twitter Inc’s attempt to beat Meerkat which has become the market leader in the area of social live-streaming video. Twitter Inc says using Periscope over any other live-streaming app will give users some key advantages. It is easier for viewers to interact with a broadcaster through Periscope. Meerkat videos can only be watched live whereas Periscope videos will be available for replays for twenty four hours.

“The broadcasters can choose to keep their content available afterwards and make it available for replay. So, if I missed your broadcast because I was busy in a meeting or something like that, I can watch the replay and I can see the comments and I can see the hearts after the fact as well,” Beykpour said.

Another key option is that Periscope allows users an option of broadcasting their videos to a selected private group. Broadcasters will also be able to save their live streams to their personal libraries. Apart from the fact that Periscope indeed carries better features than Meerkat, it is getting launched in the mobile market as Twitter Inc’s official live-streaming app. We will wait and see if Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) can end Meerkat’s torrid run to popularity. Periscope can be downloaded for free from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iTunes Store.
