6. Pakistan
Last year the number of executions in Pakistan, the next one on our list of top 12 countries that have the death penalty or use capital punishment for drugs, dropped by 73%. Despite the decrease, the country remains one of the leading executors in the world since 87 prisoners were killed in 2016. Moreover, 360 death sentences were imposed last year, and it is believed that there are thousands of people on the death row in the country. Although Pakistan’s laws impose the death sentence for possession of more than a kilo of narcotics, HRI notes that Pakistan hasn’t executed prisoners convicted of drug-related crimes in recent years.
