The Canary in Foot Locker’s Coalmine: DICK’S Guidance Cut Drags NIKE Down With It

On August 25, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE:DKS) not only missed Wall Street numbers, but also sent a warning signal to NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE), the brand on which it relies the most. DICK’S shares plunged up to 31% following a Q2 report that missed Wall Street estimates and came with an unexpected forecast cut, and the damage didn’t stop there. NIKE, Lululemon, and On Holding all fell the same morning, with no company-specific news to report.

A Healthy Core, Left Vulnerable By Foot Locker

On the surface, DICK’S core business appeared to be going well. Net sales for the quarter increased 53% year-over-year to $5.59 billion, aided in part by a boost from the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also largely reflecting the addition of Foot Locker, while the legacy DICK’S brand reported 4.9% comparable-sales growth on greater transaction counts and higher average tickets.

The problem turned up inside Foot Locker, a footwear chain that DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE:DKS) had acquired and is currently integrating. Pro forma comparable sales for the Foot Locker business decreased 3.6%, and management stated that conditions in the sports footwear and clothing market became more promotional as the quarter went, pushing DICK’S to fight more aggressively on price to maintain its position, which pressured margins. The result was a full-year forecast decrease across the board: revenue guidance was reduced, operating income guidance was reduced from a prior range of $1.69-1.81 billion to $1.45-1.55 billion, and adjusted EPS projection was cut to $11.00-12.00, roughly 19% lower than the $14.20 Wall Street projected.

A Report On NIKE

Foot Locker has long been one of NIKE’s most important wholesale partners, providing a key avenue for the brand’s shoes to reach consumers. When DICK’S says it had to discount harder-to-move footwear and that new launches underperformed, it’s essentially delivering a real-time report on NIKE’s product pipeline and demand, as the retailer stands between NIKE and the consumer.

NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) shares tumbled almost 3% the same morning on that notion, adding to a stock that is already down more than 75% from its late-2021 all-time high, suggesting that investors are considering the “promotional athletic footwear market” as a sector-wide issue rather than a Dick’s-specific one.

Smart Money Sentiment

Institutional positioning shifted in opposite directions for the two companies. DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE:DKS) saw hedge fund ownership increase from 48 funds in the first quarter to 52 in the second, suggesting that institutional investors were accumulating positions ahead of the guidance drop. NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE), on the other hand, saw hedge fund ownership fall from 71 to 56 during the same period, indicating broader institutional skepticism regarding the stock even before DICK’S provided new evidence of a promotional footwear market.

The Bull Case

The case for DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE:DKS) is based on the strength of its legacy business, which recorded robust comparable-sales growth even in a challenging quarter, indicating that the core sporting-goods retailer remains viable despite the Foot Locker integration challenges. If the promotional climate stabilizes or DICK’S effectively repositions Foot Locker’s merchandising approach, the current guidance decrease could be considered conservative. For NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE), the case is more indirect: a weak quarter at one wholesale partner doesn’t necessarily suggest that NIKE’s broader multi-channel business, including direct-to-consumer operations, is deteriorating at the same rate.

However, DICK’S own numbers speak to a deteriorating promotional climate in athletic footwear, rather than just an isolated integration hitch, and a roughly 20% decrease to adjusted EPS outlook indicates that management sees far weaker conditions ahead. Foot Locker’s emphasis on footwear launches and retro silhouettes places it squarely in the product category where NIKE has failed to generate excitement for years, so this news could be an early, concrete indicator of ongoing lackluster demand for NIKE’s core product selection.

Insider Monkey’s Verdict

The report is most relevant not for what it says about DICK’S core sporting goods business, which remains strong, but for what it means about the broader athletic footwear market on which NIKE relies. Investors in DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE:DKS) should keep an eye on whether the Foot Locker segment’s promotional pressure eases or lingers into the holiday season, as this will decide whether the guidance drop was a one-time reset or the beginning of a longer post-acquisition adjustment. Investors in NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) should treat this as another data point in an already cautious narrative, with an eye on upcoming NIKE-specific earnings and wholesale order data to confirm whether DICK’S description of softness in footwear launches reflects a broader, sustained demand problem rather than a single retailer’s execution issues.

The $250 Trillion AI Hype is Real. A few years from now, you’ll probably wish you’d bought this stock.

When Jeff Bezos said that one breakthrough technology would shape Amazon’s destiny, even Wall Street’s biggest analysts were caught off guard.

Fast forward a year and Amazon’s new CEO Andy Jassy described generative AI as a “once-in-a-lifetime” technology that is already being used across Amazon to reinvent customer experiences.

At the 8th Future Investment Initiative conference, Elon Musk predicted that by 2040 there would be at least 10 billion humanoid robots, with each priced between $20,000 and $25,000.

Do the math. According to Musk, this technology could be worth $250 trillion by 2040.

Put another way, that’s roughly equal to:

  • 175 Teslas
  • 107 Amazons
  • 140 Metas
  • 84 Googles
  • 65 Microsofts
  • And 55 Nvidias

And here’s the wild part — this $250 trillion wave isn’t tied to one company, but to an entire ecosystem of AI innovators set to reshape the global economy.

It’s a leap so massive, it could reshape how businesses, governments, and consumers operate worldwide.

Even if that $250 trillion figure sounds ambitious, major firms like PwC and McKinsey still see AI unlocking multi-trillion-dollar potential.

How could anything be worth that much?

The answer lies in a breakthrough so powerful it’s redefining how humanity works, learns, and creates.

And this breakthrough has already set off a frenzy among hedge funds and Wall Street’s top investors.

What most investors don’t realize is that one under-owned company holds the key to this $250 trillion revolution.

In fact, Verge argues this company’s supercheap AI technology should concern rivals.

Before I reveal the details, let’s talk about how some of the richest people on the planet are positioning themselves.

  • Bill Gates sees artificial intelligence as the “biggest technological advance in my lifetime,” more transformative than the internet or personal computer, capable of improving healthcare, education, and addressing climate change.
  • Larry Ellison — through Oracle, is spending billions on Nvidia chips and partnering with Cohere to embed generative AI across Oracle’s cloud and apps.
  • Warren Buffett — not known for tech hype — says this breakthrough could have a ‘hugely beneficial social impact.

When billionaires from Silicon Valley to Wall Street line up behind the same idea — you know it’s worth paying attention to.

Even as we admire what Tesla, Nvidia, Alphabet, and Microsoft have built, we believe an even greater opportunity lies elsewhere…

But the real story isn’t Nvidia — it’s a much smaller company quietly improving the critical technology that makes this entire revolution possible.

And judging by what I’m hearing from both Silicon Valley insiders and Wall Street veterans…

This prediction might not be bold at all:

My name is Inan Dogan. I’m the co-founder and Research Director of Insider Monkey. I have an important message for you today.

Since March 2017, my stock picks have returned 16.5% annually. Today, I’ve found an opportunity even bigger than my British American Tobacco call.

Two years ago, Wall Street wrote off British American Tobacco (BTI) as a “melting ice cube.” The stock had crashed 40% from its peak, and consensus said the business was dying.

We looked under the cover and realized they were wrong.

We alerted our subscribers, and BTI returned 90% in just 16 months.

Now if you had invested just $10,000 in BTI in June 2024, you’d be sitting on $19,000 in October 2025.

Today, we have identified a nearly identical pattern in a digital-first giant trading at $3.

While the market panics over a surface-level revenue decline, our PhD-led research shows management has actually surgically cut $100 million in waste to focus on high-margin growth.

This pattern is a hallmark of our 16.5% annual return track record. The current opportunity offers a 400% upside potential—dwarfing even our 90% BTI return.
