Shattering the Ceiling: The Select Few Stocks That Blew Past Wall Street Estimates Yesterday

More than 100 companies released quarterly earnings reports yesterday, providing investors with another broad snapshot of corporate America during the peak of the second-quarter earnings season. Overall, results indicated that business activity remains relatively resilient despite persistent macroeconomic uncertainties. Before we provide investors with a list of companies who shattered Wall Street predictions in an economy marked by geopolitical turmoil and soaring energy prices, it is important to compare this data to a period of normalcy.

Per research by data platforms like FactSet, in a standard economic environment, almost three-quarter of the companies on a major stock market index exceed analyst expectations on earnings by any amount. However, investors should keep in mind that most of these beats, roughly 50%, are very close to their estimates, in the range of 0.1% to 9.9%. Only about 25% of the companies exceed Wall Street expectations by over 10%. The number of those that top expectations by 15% or more is even lower, hovering around 15%.
