Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) was held by 69 hedge funds at the end of Q2 2026 in the Insider Monkey database, with a total stake value of just over $5.6 billion. This is up from 64 hedge fund holders with a cumulative investment of just over $5.5 billion in the previous quarter.
Strong Refining Margins Set the Stage for More Upside:
Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) crushed Wall Street estimates in its Q2 report on August 5, as the supply disruptions amid the Middle East conflict pushed US gasoline and diesel crack spreads, a measure of refiner profitability, to record levels. As a result, the company delivered its strongest quarterly profit since Russia invaded Ukraine back in 2022.
Notably, Phillips 66 expects the high refining margins to continue. The company’s executive VP of marketing and commercial, Brian Mandell, revealed in its last earnings call that the global markets are short 7 million barrels per day (bpd) of refined products from the Middle East and Asia, and another 1.4 million bpd from Russia. According to Mr. Mandell, “this really sets us up for stronger margins through Q3 and perhaps the rest of next year”.
The prolonged disruptions to global crude supplies have come as a boon for the US refining sector, with international buyers scrambling to secure alternative fuel supplies amid concerns over disruptions to Middle Eastern exports. The soaring overseas demand has sent the country’s fuel exports to record highs this summer. To make sure it doesn’t miss out on the opportunity, Phillips 66 plans to operate refineries in the mid-90% range of their combined capacity in the third quarter.
Debt reduction remains a key priority for the US refiner. The company took advantage of the unusually high profits to bolster its balance sheet and reduced its net debt by nearly 25% sequentially to $16.5 billion. It remains on track to lower this figure to less than $16 billion by the end of 2026. Moreover, the refiner also approved a $10 billion increase to its share repurchase program last month.
An important growth catalyst for the company is the recently approved Western Gateway Pipeline system. Phillips 66 will own 49.9% of the $5 billion joint venture, with the rest owned by Kinder Morgan and HF Sinclair.
The solid recent performance and growth prospects have helped Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) attract significant positive attention from Wall Street. On August 11, Mizuho boosted its price target on PSX by $8, while the analysts from Citi, Wells Fargo, Barclays, and several others have also raised their respective price objectives on the stock over the last few days.
The Refining Boom Could Run Out of Steam:
Investors need to keep in mind that the unusually high profits recently posted by US refiners were a result of extraordinary market conditions. If a peace deal is reached and global energy supplies return to normal, refining margins could fall substantially. Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) has already posted gains of almost 79% since the beginning of the year, significantly outperforming the wider market, suggesting that much of the recent optimism may already be priced into the stock. As a result, even a modest decline in refining margins or lower earnings in 2027 could lead to a significant correction in its valuation.
Conclusion:
Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) offers compelling near-term prospects, supported by the soaring refining margins, strengthening balance sheet, high shareholder returns, and promising growth catalysts. However, investors should balance its solid fundamentals against the risk of valuation pressure and a possible normalization of margins.
