The 13F filings show the funds’ and investors’ portfolio positions as of March 31st, a week after the market trough. Coming in second is Peter Rathjens, Bruce Clarke and John Campbell of Arrowstreet Capital, with a $52.1 million position; the fund has 0.1% of its 13F portfolio invested in the stock. Other hedge funds and institutional investors that are bullish consist of Mason Hawkins’s Southeastern Asset Management, Renaissance Technologies and Paul Singer’s Elliott Investment Management. In terms of the portfolio weights assigned to each position GAMCO Investors allocated the biggest weight to CNH Industrial NV (NYSE:CNHI), around 0.72% of its 13F portfolio. Southeastern Asset Management is also relatively very bullish on the stock, earmarking 0.65 percent of its 13F equity portfolio to CNHI.
With a general bullishness amongst the heavyweights, some big names were breaking ground themselves. Renaissance Technologies, created the most valuable position in CNH Industrial NV (NYSE:CNHI). As you can see these stocks had an average of 28.75 hedge funds with bullish positions and the average amount invested in these stocks was $690 million. That figure was $157 million in CNHI’s case. Zillow Group Inc (NASDAQ:Z) is the most popular stock in this table. On the other hand Carlyle Group LP (NASDAQ:CG) is the least popular one with only 16 bullish hedge fund positions. CNH Industrial NV (NYSE:CNHI) is not the least popular stock in this group but hedge fund interest is still below average. Our calculations showed that top 10 most popular stocks among hedge funds returned 41.4% in 2019 and outperformed the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) by 10.1 percentage points. These stocks gained 13.4% in 2020 through June 22nd and still beat the market by 15.9 percentage points. A small number of hedge funds were also right about betting on CNHI as the stock returned 30.7% during the second quarter and outperformed the market by an even larger margin.
