Google Inc (GOOGL) Will Not Be Able To Scrap Normal Driving

There is no denying that driverless cars are the future of the auto industry expected to make roads safer by eliminating error-prone humans. Advancement in technology has already seen a number of cars come up with partially automated systems as the dream slowly becomes a reality. Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has its own line of driverless cars, having gone as far as carrying out pilot testing all in the effort of making the technology more practical. Speaking on CNBC, Gas Monkey Garage founder, Richard Rawlings, reiterated his belief that driverless cars are becoming a reality faster than initially thought. However, he does not expect normal driving to be scrapped altogether, anytime soon.

“I think it is a very interesting ideology and may work in some arenas. But I do think America especially, is built on the freedom of having a car, be able to get in and go and the power and actually gripping the wheels,” said Mr. Rawlings.

There is no doubt that many people will pounce on the opportunity of having to just sit in a car while the automated systems do the rest. However, the experience and desire to be in control is sure to have an effect on some people making the full transition to driverless cars according to Rawlings. Something that the likes of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) may struggle against in ensuring all people on the roads transition to driverless cars.

There are a lot of issues that need to be sorted out,Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) having confirmed that its cars have already been involved in three crashes in California.

The search giant is sure to face stiff competition from Audi Nissan Daimler and Delphi on its push to set the pace with the technology. Convincing people that driverless driving is much cooler than normal driving is another headwind that Rawlings expects automakers to struggle with.

“I think there is a saying worldwide that says a car is one that is fast and loud. You can roll down the windows, have a good time, and turn up the radio and all that kind of stuff. But I do think that doing it is more fun than telling the car to do it,” said Mr. Rawlings.
