Facebook Inc (FB) Looking To Automate And Standardize Technology With New Hardware Designs

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has set out on an ambitious plan of connecting millions of servers around the world in an effort of ensuring technologies are able to handle loads of data that are millions time more than what is currently being handled. The giant social network has already released a design of a networking device that is to be used to coordinate actions in its data centers around the globe according to the Financial Express. The new device works on off the shelf components as well as sophisticated software that Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) intends to use to speed and enhance efficiency of its commercial computer centers. The networking tool is expected to add new competition to the likes of Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) and Juniper Networks, Inc. (NYSE:JNPR), which are known for commercial networking equipment.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) hopes that by open sourcing, it will attract and encourage people outside the company to innovate on the networking device having succeeded in the past on the same front. The giant social network has at its disposal one of the most automated computer systems with the entire network overseen by just one person.

The cost of the new project is not of great concern to Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), but focus is to readjust the entire computing system such that it is more reliable and efficient. A new switch ‘6 Pack’ has already shown the level of optimization that can be achieved as it takes 12 computer boards used in Wedge. Integrating them into machine with eight boards will help in coordinating multiple racks. The switch is also able to move data in an out of data centers.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) network engineering vice president hopes that the new development could help scale speeds to highs of 100 gigabits per seconds, 200 gigs, and 400 gigs in years to come. 100 gigabits per second is currently considered cutting edge expected to roll out after a year. The 6-pack modular design is only a small portion of Facebook’s effort in standardizing and automating technology.
