2013 has been, without a doubt, the year of video content and by the looks of it, this trend is highly likely to continue in 2014 as well. But instead of discussing the causes of the viral videos frenzy, today we would like to take a look at the videos that had the biggest impact in 2013. And no, we’re not going to talk about cat videos.

At the end of last year, Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) released a list of most effective videos in 2013, based on an algorithm that encompassed several factors: organic views, paid views, and audience retention. The latter indicator refers to the percentage of the view people ended up watching or, in other words, to what extent users were compelled to keep watching the video. This sounds like a pretty complex algorithm but since Google bothered to crunch the numbers, it will be interesting to take a look at the 2013 videos that had the biggest impact on consumers. Following, we would like to present you with the list we have compiled of the top 10 video ads of the year that has just passed.

It is interesting to note how all 10 videos on our countdown were all produced by brands. And, even more compelling is the fact that neither of them is like your typical add. All the videos listed were created with the short-film concept and they all tell a story that goes well beyond just purchasing a product or a service. Even though they might not be the most expensive or even the most viewed ads of all time, the following videos have managed one very important thing: to capture audiences worldwide.

Curious to see if you too have shared one of 2013’s top video ads? Let’s take a look at the countdown.

Note: only videos uploaded on YouTube were taken into account for the purposes of this countdown.
