5. Arizona

The age group 25-34 is the biggest reason why Arizona has one of the highest rates in the US, as suicide is the second leading cause of death for this age group. Arizona had over 1,400 deaths from suicide alone, which is a very painful statistic to read. Arizona has luckily taken note of the epidemic and funds for awareness groups are being raised to help in reducing the way too high suicide rate in the state.

4. Utah

The male suicide rate in Utah is 35, nearly 12 higher than the national average. It is the white population which has a significantly higher suicide rate than the national average, which shows that a lot more needs to be done to bring this under control.

3. Missouri

More than 1,200 people died in Missouri from suicide, with once again, males being much more likely than females to end their life. Firearms were the main choice of suicide with more than 50% of suicides committed with a firearm. Suicides outnumbered homicides by 2:1.

2. New Mexico

New Mexico has the second highest suicide rate in the US at 25, which is a major cause for concern in the state. Firearms were once again the preferred method of committing suicide, which perhaps shows that not having the easiest means might help in reducing the rate. Of course, that won’t happen if the NRA has anything to say, and they definitely will.

1. Colorado

Topping our list of 5 worst states for suicides in the US is Colorado, with nearly 1,300 deaths in the state from suicide. However, there might be light at the end of the tunnel for the state, as suicides dropped by a whopping 40% in March and April of 2020, which directly contradicts all the estimates of increases in suicides due to the pandemic. We will have to wait and see whether this number is just a coincidence or whether the pandemic actually did help reduce the suicides.
